I can’t say I relate to the pain and longing the protagonist feels when wanting some dogs. But, the author sure does do his best to make you FEEL it!
I just finished a chapter that hit hard showing the striking contrast between how differences may make us enemies vs the innocence of sudden childhood mortality. The second one makes the first one seem much less important.

Oh, I am not saying I fell in love with them by any means . . . but the events changed my perspective some. Now, I am not sure if they will be in the story more after this chapter, so that might change my opinion again!
