I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been adding Ukraine titles to their TBR lately. While I fully intended to pick something up this week, the feeling is now urgent as I've just realised Ukraine is one of the gaps on my world reading map. I'm sure I've passed through in numerous travel titles, but nothing comes to mind that's strong enough to say I've read Ukraine.

So I thought I'd share some of the books that appeal to me.

Borderland: A Journey Through the History of Ukraine (this is the one I think I will start with)
East West Street - tripfiction.com just started a readalong for this book on 4 March if you are interested in participating
The Museum of Abandoned Secrets
Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster
Snegurochka - have read the sample, will continue
Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster

What other Ukraine recommendations do you have to share?

That does sound good Claire - quite a new release too.

Yes, I haven't seen it on any lists, but I came across it being mentioned on twitter and since it's a contemporary book by a women, I was all the more interested in the perspective.

Highly recommend Zinky Boys: Soviet Voices from the Afghanistan War which is absolutely relevant as Putin uses his young Russian soldiers in yet another conflict and tightens his control over the narrative employed in Russia "justifying" his barbaric endeavor. Strikingly similar propaganda was used in Afghanistan.

I'm going to read this too - plus while I was on the publisher website, I saw they have an annual subscription so I did that too! Haha.

I'm currently reading Death and the Penguin. I read The Gardener from Ochakov a couple of years ago, and I liked his writing style I just felt like the story could of gone further than it did.

I enjoy the slightly black, Soviet humour in this one. Seems very apt at the moment, reminder of how resilient the Ukrainian people are.
