I know you are looking for horror, but German fortean writer Ulrich Magin states this novel bascially offers the perfect psychological explanation model for the abduction experience. Plus, it is mindblowing and funny as hell.
Over in the group Creatures, creatures everywhere we are reading Communion by Whitley Striber next month. Feel free to come over and read with us.

(I have some of these, but haven't read them yet)and
(I have read this one.)
No, I didn’t know. I know him from his fictional vampire series which is really good. I’ve heard his name mentioned on podcast but I don’t know a great deal about him.

Oh yeah, Streiber! I've read Majestic and The Grays. The Grays sounds exactly what I was looking for, but I remember not being wild about it. Still, I'll give Alien Hunter a go.

Tommyknockers doesn't quite fit, though I did really enjoy it (not sure why it is slagged, even by King himself).
I enjoyed the movie of The Puppet Masters and would likely enjoy the book. But it's not quite what I am looking for.
There's many movies that are in the style that I'm talking about. I wonder why there isn't the great abduction horror novel? In movies, there's:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Signs
The Fourth Kind
Altered
Dark Skies
Fire in the Sky
Intruders
The X-Files
Taken
Night Skies
Alien Abduction
Spielberg was going to follow Raiders with a movie called Night Skies. That movie sounds great and was based on a 'true' event ( Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter). Someone ought to write that as a book
I've been thinking about this! I love ambiguous, spooky alien movies and always wondered why I never came across understated, atmospheric ufo-based horror novels. Maybe because the asthetic just doesn't translate well on paper as it does on screen? I'd still like to find one, though. As much as I love science-fiction/adventure books, I really think aliens could also be used as a really unsettling horror element -especially with a little psychological horror thrown in! You know, the whole " have they really been seeing aliens or are they going crazy" kind of horror that works so well in The X-files.
I was hoping to find a recommendation here, so if you've got one let me know!

I know its a bit late to add to this thread but thought I might add my two pence worth. I am currently reading The Uninvited series, which seem to fit your criteria for recommendations. The first bookThe Uninvited by Clive Harold
The Uninvited 2 : The Visitation by Frank Taylor
The Uninvited 3 :The Abduction by Frank Taylor
Frank Taylor is actually a pen name Shaun Hutson wrote under for this series.

To clarify, I'm not looking for 'alien' stories like Alien or McCammon's Stinger. Instead, think of the vibe of movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Fire in the Sky or The Fourth Kind. UFO sightings, abductions, that sort of thing.
I'm not looking for 'true accounts' either. I've read plenty of those.
I read and enjoyed the Area 51 series and Undisclosed, but those are more silly action/adventure stories. I like the spooky sensation of everyday people being confronted by something beyond their ability to comprehend.
Those types of stories seem to be few and far between in the horror field.
To start of with a few suggestions of my own:
Nighteyes (no ebook edition that I could find)
Sightings
Night Lights: A Short Story
Books I have, but haven't yet read:
The Others
Trinity
Lords of Twilight
Stickmen
