Jane (PS) | 24582 comments 1. Introduce yourself to your team. Let your team members know where you are from. This is a 'nice to know' when categories are announced and when team-mates can expect other members to post their book choices.

2. Lead Rapper - reserve a couple of posts in this thread tracking your team's book selection and completion. (Alternatively they could convert a chat comment to the tracking post/s.)

3. Name your team. Using this round's theme of BTS, come up with a fun name. Given we are an open/public group with no age limit, so please make sure any chosen name is smart, not smutty ;)

Please PM your name to Jane(PS) by 31 March.

4. If you have a private profile, please 'friend' your team-mates. This is really important, because without this, your team-mates can't see your shelves to select a books under option 2. (It will also help with one of the categories in this round!)

5. Please post your book selections/completions in the format provided below. (This format is also posted in both the Q&A and Sign-Up threads.) We need to know the week that each book corresponds to, the page numbers, and how the book qualifies including links to lists/shelves (where applicable), etc. I can't stress this enough. When in doubt - link it*!

* don't link to your review in your completion post - reviews in your completion posts should be included in full in that post.

You don't want to start reading a book and then find it doesn't meet the requirements because some information (eg page count or theme link) was missing from your original post.

I will be monitoring this and your book will not be considered complete until I am satisfied that your selection and completion posts comply with the format rules of the challenge.

Remember - you can ONLY change your book selection in the week that the theme is called.

6. You MUST check in with your team each week, ideally once the theme is announced. Please let your team know if you expect to have spotty communication or are on holidays or having an operation, etc.

7. When you post the completion of your book, you must post a review; enough for us to know you have actually read the book. Please don't link to a review. You must post the review in this thread.

8. Re-reads are allowed but you can't read the same book twice within this challenge.

9. There is no prize for the winning team - bragging rights only :)

10. Each week, the theme will be announced in the Q&A/Announcement thread. The full list of themes announced during this round will be maintained in msg 1 of that thread.

The Rule on the Pass Option
* Each team can only have ONE member using their pass each week.
* Each member can only use that pass once each 5 weeks.
* This means that one or two team members (dependent upon the size of your team) will miss using a pass in each 5 week block.
* No-one can use the pass option in the last week of the challenge.
* In the final week Option 2 has altered and I will be allocating each team another team from which their book selection must be chosen :)

Jane (PS) | 24582 comments Key selection and completion post information. You must have ALL elements in your book posts.

For selection post Option 1 you must have:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Page numbers
How the book qualifies - please note which qualifying bookshelf/list you are using or the tags that justifies that it works.
If the theme is based off the bookcover, post the cover. If there is a letter count in the title, publication date etc, please note these details.

For selection post Option 2 you must have:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Page numbers
Name of the team-member, their star rating, the date they read the book.

For selection post Option 3 you must have:
Week #
PASS

For the completion post you must have:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Rating (1-5)
Review

Please DO NOT CHAT in these selction/completion posts. It needs to be super clear.

If you 'waffle' about your decided book - please REPOST your selection once you decide. DO NOT go back and edit your waffling post.

IF YOU NEED TO CORRECT A POST FOR MISSING INFORMATION or because the didn't qualify etc, please REPOST this inforamtion in a NEW post. I don't want to have to keep going backwards in the thread.

1. The more modern form of the genre emerged with the formation of one of the earliest K-pop groups, the boy band Seo Taiji and Boys, in 1992.

Please state your edition's publication date.

3. Previously, South Korean pop music was called gayo. Gayo is an old form of the Korean traditional poetry.

* Read a book with an MC who writes (author, poet, journalist, PHD student writing a thesis) or an LGBTQ+ character.
Qualification must be via the precis, main page location, list or shelf.

4. The first known use of the term K-pop occurred on Billboard on October 9, 1999

* Read a book with a 9 in the page numbers.
Rules on page numbers apply - minimum count (109pp ~ since you can't get a 9 in the count otherwise and still qualify); any English language edition.

5. The French Institut national de l'audiovisuel defines K-pop as a "fusion of synthesized music, sharp dance routines and fashionable, colorful outfits."

* Read a book with a colorful (energetic) cover. The cover must have at least 5 separately identifiable colours from: White, Yellow, Orange, Red, Pink, Purple, Blue, Aqua, Green, Grey & Black.
Please state your identified colors.

Qualification must be via the precis, main page location, list or shelf.

8. Some K-pop artists have suggested that the uncertainty and pressures of their jobs as entertainers may be detrimental to their mental health.

* Read a book with an MC who is either struggling with mental health or works in the medical industry (doctor, nurse, psychologist, etc)
Qualification must be via the precis, main page location, list or shelf.

9. The biggest K-pop band at the moment is BTS.

* Read a book with the letters B T & S in the title and/or series name.

* Read a book with a handsome* man on the cover.
(*your interpretation.)
Facial features must be seen clearly.

12. Suga is a rapper and possibly the quietest of the members. His personality profile is (supposedly) 'Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving'.

* Read a book with an intelligent MC from one of the following lists:
Brainy Romantic Heroes
Gay Bookish, Nerdy, Geeky Characters
Nerdy Geeky Heroines of Romance

13. J-Hope is a rapper as well, but with his independent release of the song 'Chicken Noodle Soup', he is also the wealthiest.

* Read a book from one of the following lists:
Millionaire, Billionaire, King, Wealthy Man
MM Romance with a millionaire/billionaire and an everyman

14. Jimin - Fabulous dancer, great singer and Gucci loves him as they sell out of everything he wears. He's also the member that many men would turn gay for (even though Jimin is not actually gay). Is he almost perfect?

* Read a book from one of the following lists:
The Mary Sues of Literature
The Gary Stus of Literature
Dream Guy
YA contemporary romance with perfect guy
Best Gay For You
Any book written by Mary Calmes

15. V says he would have been a farmer if he hadn't been in BTS.

* Read a book with a rural setting (eg ranch, farm, wilderness).
Qualification must be via the precis, main page location, list or shelf. I will accept 'small town' as a qualification as well.

Louise | 1163 comments Hi All, I’m Louise from a currently sunny South Wales, where I live with my 5yr old daschund/spaniel cross, who has been a great companion to me in the last 18 months since losing my partner. This is possibly my 6th or 7th time playing this game and I always enjoy it. Looking forward to this theme.
I’m a bit of a challenge addict and try to get one book to fit as many challenges that I have on the go as possible. Since Covid I’ve leaned more towards audiobooks, reading them during my work hours, where hybrid working allows me to work from home 3 days a week with only 2 day’s commuting needed, with fuel costs rising is definitely a blessing in disguise. I will read pretty much anything in the search of the ultimate challenge book but do have a weakness for PNR, historical fiction and thrillers.

message 9: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1163 comments First task is to come up with a team name that relates to our theme. I’m am hopeless with names. Ideas welcomed

message 10: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1075 comments Hello! my name is Teresa, I'm from southern Alberta, Canada where I live with my husband, two teenage children, and 4 cats! I've played several times and am looking forward to this round!

I'm a Domestic Engineer/Executive Assistant for our family and have thought about finding something outside the house, but teenagers actually still need a lot of care, even if it is mostly as counsellor, appointment setter, and chauffeur.

Lately, I read mm romance exclusively, with my favourite genres being paranormal/Sci-fi/Fantasy though I do enjoy the odd historical and contemporary. My only real requirements for a book is that it has a happy ending.

I love audio books but generally only listen when I do my paper route in the morning (I took over when my kids went on to other things) and if I'm alone in the car.

Teresa (teresab78) | 1075 comments As for names - Confession time - I have never listened to a single K-pop song and only know BTS from media references.

non-theme related names though

Lucky Number Seven (though trite)
Seventh Heaven

somewhat related:

Seven Singing Saja (Saja is Korean for Lion)
or
Seven Singing Foxes (as Foxes are popular animals in K-pop, so the internet says)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 437 comments Hi team,
I am a retired university librarian from Upstate New York near Lake Ontario. I live with my husband also retired and near my daughter and grandson. No pets. Love to travel, but Covid put a crimp in that. When you're older, you can't afford to lose this much time, there's still so much to see.

I read in a wide range of genres as well as non-fiction. As Teresa does I prefer a happy ending. Not big on vampires, but have read books with them in it, but don't pick up books with vampire MC, something about the blood!

Used to do audio when I had a long commute to work, but now not so much.

As Louise is, I am a challenge addict and try to have books serve more than one challenge. I have done this challenge several times.

As for names:
Seven Singing Foxes - Like this - I can't sing and I'm not foxy but I can pretend, so why not!

I love Kyo and Castor! They were perfect for each other. There is action, danger, betrayal (I feel a lot of the books I read lately have this) but also duty, family, and love. It’s strange to say I’m looking forward to a war but I hope to see some demons being demolished!

Review: Claire Brooks agent Dove for the Company) is pursuing Stanton Howard, responsible for her brother's death, when she is wounded and falls from a roof into the hands of rival agent organization the Wardens. In order to continue her pursuit she agrees to lead the Wardens to Howard and an evil doctor who damaged one of the Warden's top agents. Alastair Payne is given responsibility for her and they set off neither trusting the other. This is great steampunk with lots of unusual gadgets, a romantic entanglement and lots of action. Loved it.

Review: I absolutely loved this book. The narration of the audiobook was amazing as well. I've always enjoyed a good forced mating turned to love trope but add that to the unrequited love but thought they hated you trope and it's perfection. Plus a splash of humor. This book had everything I loved. I can't wait to start the next book in the series. I'm curious how this love spell crap turns out.

This wasn’t a bad introduction to this series, it did feel a little rushed at times and the ending was predictable. The only difference I could tell from other books of this genre is that the human world knows and embraces the existence of the supernatural one. I may continue with the series.

Review: This book was hilarious. It had mystery, intigue, twists and turns, and lots of romance. It also had lots of comedy. The premise is two gods that have been strippednof their powers have been exiled to LA to run this matchmaking agency. They have to match 100 couples before their punishment is complete. In this book they matched 1. I will definitely read more books in this series.

Hi Raven

Please update your selection post to show all the information required - see message 3 above:

Those formats (or very close to them) need to be used for both the selection and completion each week. All the information needs to be there in each post so no-one (me or the Lead Rapper) has to go digging to see if the book qualifies, but they can if they wish :)
