Don’t we all want a life where we aren’t judged by how we look, and what people’s opinions of us are? In Noughts and Crosses this is exactly what the two main characters, Callum and Sephy want, but unfortunately don’t get. Malorie Blackman creates a world that is very similar to ours, but with one major difference. This is a world where the Black Crosses are superior to the White Noughts. Everything about racial prejudice and racism is still true though. There is Sephy’s family, who are Crosses. They are named Crosses because of their closeness to God, since they are black. There is also Callum’s family, who are Noughts. which means they are white. Noughts are the members of the lower class while the Crosses are members of the aristocracy. It is unacceptable in this world for a Cross to love a Nought, but Callum and Sephy prove this to be otherwise. They both loved each other very much. Sephy and Callum have always been best friends. Callum’s mom used to be a nanny for Sephy’s family, but unfortunately she got fired. After Callum’s mom got fired, both mothers wanted Sephy and Callum to stop seeing each other. A grudge was created faster than the blink of an eye because of the difference in their skin color, but Callum and Sephy did not listen to their mothers. Both of them continued to see each other in secrecy. Both of them make up lies and excuses to their parents about their absences. Malorie Blackman really analyzes and illustrates how ridiculous racial prejudice can be. Tensions are building when Callum is accepted into Sephy’s school. This all culminates when there is a terrorist bombing in the mall. Callum’s father is the suspect of planting the bomb on the orders of the Liberation Militia, a group working for Nought’s rights. When the events unfold, not only are Callum and Sephy lives in danger, but now the lives around them are too. This part of the story eventually ends when Callum, who is now part of the Liberation Militia, which is the resistance, kidnaps Sephy. Callum does this out of love, yet he is accused of raping Sephy because he got her pregnant. Callum argues that he was innocent, but he is convicted and hung. Moments before he is hung, Sephy shouts out ,“ I will always love you Callum and our baby will love you too.” This part of the story moves and stuns the reader. Malorie Blackman's draws you in and keeps your attention with the story. It's definitely a book that you cannot and will not stop reading. I gave the book 5 stars on Goodreads. The story is told in Sephy and Callum’s points of view, which really adds a lot to this story. You can tell how both of these people feel. Sephy and Callum are remarkable people, showing the strength that love can bring, the bridges it can cross, and the determination to see past what's on the outside. Noughts and Crosses is a story of prejudice, friendship, love, and triumph of the human spirit. This story brought forth a rainbow of emotions. Noughts and Crosses is a remarkable book, one that you won't want to put down once you've started reading it. Noughts and Crosses is a tragedy and the ending is so shocking that it will drag your heart from your body and bring tears to your eyes.
