Haile (optimisms) | 13 comments I think I read this book between 2009-2012, but give or take two years, it's really a vague memory. It might've been YA, some of what I read was on that level and I don't remember the specific ages of the characters, but it feels more like it was for children than for teenagers. I think it was a male author. It was a physical book, probably only a few years old at the most, and I don't remember anything about the cover. If I had to give a genre I'd maybe say sci-fi or fantasy (I can't remember if the powers/mutations are science or magic)

At the time I read this, I remember thinking it was a very strange book. It was very fun! But it was just weird in the way that you would never want to explain the plot to someone else because it just sounds ridiculous and odd. Anyway, here's what I remember:
-There were 5-7 main characters, definitely an ensemble cast; might've even been multi-POV
-For some reason, the society they lived in had been cordoned off or confined in some way (I remember a really really big fence). Maybe they were being protected from something but the vibes in my memory are more like they were being imprisoned.
-Each of the main characters was a child or teenager, no adult main characters
-The main characters all knew each other and functioned as a group; they weren't spread out, they were all together and followed the main plotline together
-They had all recently developed, or were developing, a unique power of some kind, like an X-men type thing; I think they were called mutations in the book. I think one of them could fly, maybe one with electricity powers, and maybe one who could grow really tall or really big or really strong? and there was one that was like....idk this is so vague but I remember thinking one of their powers was gross or awkward or embarrassing in some way (I was approx. 10 so take what you want from that).
-There was something about a twin, or a set of twins... maybe one (or two) of the main characters was a twin? Or maybe one of them had the power to clone themself?
-A geographical region of the confined area, had this entrance that led to like a rly large cavernous area underground, and it has scary danger vibes. I think maybe the last third of the book takes place down there and then in the end the one who can fly is the one who gets them out? This is all speculation but I feel like that area was important to the plot.
-Along the same lines as the previous bullet, I also remember a scene that takes place way up high and they're looking out over the imprisoned area, maybe somewhere along the really big fence or maybe there's like a big tower in the center of the place? Also speculation

Random but might help?: At times, the book Gone by Michael Grant gave me serious dejavu for this book; there is a slight possibility that the book I'm looking for is one of the sequels to Gone. There's a confined community, there is some magic/mutation/weird stuff happening to main characters, and there is a mysterious danger thing with familiar vibes. However, some distinct differences are the group in Gone is entirely under the age of 18 but I thought there were adults in the book I'm looking for; I don't recognize any of the covers for the sequels; and I remember the writing style of Gone being really unfamiliar, it didn't feel like the same writer at all. Someday I'll probably get around to reading them and confirming definitively whether it is one of those sequels that I read, but in case anyone who sees this has already read them, I thought it was worth mentioning.

I guess I never saw the notification about your reply, but these definitely could fit. None of the titles ring a bell but the descriptions of 1 and 3 sound like good candidates. Thank you!
