Hi Lizzy, May wasn't my reading month at all, got stuck with all my current reads...Will try to read it in a week or two.
Just finished this book. 3 stars. I enjoy this sort of mystery, an off beat detective, a bit down and out and world weary. I especially liked the way Civil and his girlfriend were portrayed. Overall I thought it a bit weak but interested to look for another by this author,I spent Easter in Basel way back in 1993. Everything was closed and we spent much of our time eating with a lot of strange and interesting and amusing people in the railway station restaurant as it seemed to be the only place open for us to find a meal. Wonderful people welcoming us as poor lost Australians. Then on Easter Sunday afternoon and sun came out and people appeared everywhere. It was amazing and we loved it.
I agree, not the best, but a promising debut. There is another by him in English translation. The Basel Killings is much stronger.
Thanks Lizzy. I had actually purchased that book because I saw that it was the first in the series. Will read it soon. It’s strange how sometimes you think about a book even if it has been a bit weak. I have done that with Silver Pebbles and have concluded that the author drew all the strands of the plot together really well.
The Basel Killings was the first of his to be translated into English. It’s actually the fifth in the Inspector Hunkeler series, the book of a more seasoned writer.
after a couple of hard months finally got a little more time for reading.I quite enjoyed Silberkiesel: Hunkelers erster Fall, solid 3 stars, it was not great, but very enjoyable and good enough to make me look forward to dive deeper into the series.
