We're following up last month's pick with another highly anticipated historical fiction: I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys.

This book is Sepetys's most recent book, following her 2019 book, The Fountains of Silence (which, funnily enough, our book club read in July of 2020.) I Must Betray You takes place in Romania in 1989 against a communist regime.

Have you read any of the previous books from this author? In the past, Sepetys's books have been about historical events prior to 1960. How do you think this more modern life will be reflected in this book, as opposed to any of her previous novels?

Christine | 142 comments I started reading this today, so wanted to post my first impression before I got too far into it. This is my first book by Ruta Sepetys. I didn't read The Fountain of Silence when it was a book club pick in July 2020.

I like the last question in the original post, though I am not sure how to answer it since this is my first book by Sepetys. Even though this book takes place in 1989, it does not feel "modern" to me because it is set in communist Romania.
