IN A GRAINY SNAPSHOT in my mind, I remember the day the telegram arrived. Western Union. My parents never let me read the text, but the impact was the same for all of us. In the horror of the moment we did not realize that a telegram was actually good news. Had my brother's status been KIA instead of WIA, soldiers would have delivered the bad news to our doorstep personally. Still, this was an emotionally charged moment without precedent in our lives.
