What are your favorite science fiction books that you think we all would love to read? What impressed you about the books? What made you add the book/books to your favorites?

We can't help what we love Vickie, embrace it! We're all book junkies of some sort right? And Star Wars is like the main sci-fi of all time. (Don't tell the Star Trek people I said that)

Then if that makes you a junkie I never want to be clean! HA! I agree!

My favorites would be the Star Trek books when I was in high school.

As an adult, I liked the first two Star of the Guardians books by Margaret Weiss. Also there was Worlds of Deception by Petra Bosse. Sci Fi as it should be, both of these.

message 6: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 120 comments I'm going to stick Peter Clines here, though he's more like Scifi/Mystery/Thrillers with a touch of horror. I love his Threshold books, starting with 14.

Also, Dennis E Taylor's Bobiverse, starting with We Are Legion (We Are Bob)

Narilka | 120 comments And how can I forget Douglas Adams??

Ahhh Jeffrey, your reading list has betrayed you! (Sister! You have a sister!) No. Something else. You've played Dungeons and Dragons... 😉

I have read a lot of really enjoyable Star Wars novels over the years, but I personally love the Karen Traviss / Republic Commando Series, Supurb!

message 11: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments Haven't gotten to that yet, so good to know! I loved the Legacy of the Force series and Fate of the Jedi series. I've heard great things about the X-Wing series, too, so I want to read those as well.😊

message 12: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments I loved Foundation by Asimov, Spin by Robert Wilson and Old Man's War by Scalzi.

Hey, I have been wanting to get into the Star Wars books forever but I don't even know where to start. One of you Star Wars junkie's want to give me a jumping off point?

My husband has read all the Star Wars books and loves them.
I've always had a difficult time visualizing sci-fi books so sometimes I lost in the descriptions. But I LOVED all the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books and Andy Weir's books.
I really enjoyed Tamsyn Muir's The Locked Tomb series. Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth. They are fantasy sci-fi and weirdly fun!
Oh, and Dark Matter by Blake Crouch of course!

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments Hmm... gosh, I don’t know how to answer that, Felina.🤔 Maybe it depends on what era you're interested in. For me, I've only been interested in books set after A New Hope, so I'm slowly making my way through them.

Here's a great site that I use...

Felina | 648 comments That website is so cool! I think I’ll pick something from the legends column. I don’t hate the new movies but they don’t make me feel the same way the original trilogy did. Though I really liked The Mandalorian and Boba. There are more books on this list then I can read in one lifetime so might as well start where the feels are. I’d love to read on some stuff that gives insight into the original trilogy.

message 19: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments Exactly, Felina! The original trilogy is where it's at, for me anyway. 😊😉 I also really liked Mandalorian and Boba!

Yes! I recently completed listening to The Expanse novels & the latest release the short fiction collection Memory's Legion. Damn good stuff! I've read a great many Star Trek & Star Wars novels, I mostly stick to the new canon ones now, but I really enjoyed one of the later Legend ones Star Wars: Darth Plagueis. I pretty much consider it canon until Disney contradicts it. I haven't read a Star Trek novel for many years, but my favorite was The Return!
I highly recommend William Gibson's Alien 3!

I really enjoyed 14 but I didn't know it was a series. I need to get the next one.

The Fold (Threshold #2) is even better!
I haven't read book 3, Dead Moon yet, but I bought the audible already.

message 23: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments Turns out I already bought the second one on audible. I didn’t know it was a series and I liked 14 so much I think I just bought any book by Clines that had a sale because I have a couple by him I don’t remember buying. I read it several years back and probably should do a fe-read before I get to the second one.

Dead Moon is more horror leaning than the first two. It's a fun romp. The series goes back "on track" with book 4, Terminus.

For anyone else interested in Threshold, books 1, 2 & 3 can pretty much be read in any order. Book 4 is a direct sequel to books 1 and 2.

I read this a few months ago and it is another really fun book. The ending wasn’t what I thought either.

I listened to this one on audiobook recently and really enjoyed it immensely. It suddenly wasn’t going where I expected at all. I agree - a fun read.

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments The Murderbot Diaries are great! The Expanse series is outstanding too! The narrator of Expanse, Jefferson Mays is talented & he does justice to the belter lingo.
I bought Old Man's War on Chirp, so I'll get around to it eventually.
So many books, so little time.

message 31: by Annerlee (new)

I must get around to murderbots soon too.

I listened to the audiobook and I thought I really got something extra from it between Ray Porter's genius narration and the sound effects.

I bought the first book in The Expanse series and never got around to reading it. I need to read it and get the other books.

I just started this morning. I have heard nothing but good things!

message 37: by Alia (new)

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments I think one of the first series to blow my mind was the Hyperion Cantos Series by Dan Simmons. When I stumbled into Hyperion it was as nothing I had read before, it was mysterious, demanding and complex, so it widened my concept of scifi.

It took me a while to get to Parable of the Sower and was impressed by Octavia E. Butler. She made these socially complex sharp books.

A couple more that took me by surprise were Ninefox Gambit (The Machineries of Empire Series) by Yoon Ha Lee and Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch Series) by Ann Leckie. Both series were very creative and interesting.

I will always add anything you say to my TBR because you read the best shit Alia! I'm reading Ninefox Gambit in June and I went ahead and bought the second in the series because I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it! I'll get the third as soon as my book buying ban is over. And Octavia Butler is a goddess! Kindred was so good but hurt my heart so badly.

message 39: by Alia (new)

Alia (alialg) | 240 comments @Sally: oh, no! My family would feel responsible and apologetic for that... Mortals! hahaha

I am cheering on you with Ninefox Gambit! But take it slow, what if you don't like it and you already bought the other books and my mother would be screaming it-was-not-my-fault-I-dont-know-why-she-is-like-that? hahahaha

Kindred! That was the last I read from her, it was amazing, she doesn't back off when crushing your heart indeed!
I am going to read Lilith's Brood soon! :D

There is a waitlist at my library and I’m currently maxed out on holds so I can’t quite see how long it will take to get a copy. I am probably a couple of months out from being able to group read. Is that okay?
