I had just an inkling that she might not be Ravenel's daughter. She was a very different temperament than the other Ravenel's and she didn't share many physical characteristics with them.
I didn't think she was Edmund Ravenel's by birth. There was something different and secretive about Helen that started in the first book. I did believe that she was a distant relative on her mother's side, and Edmund didn't want her in the house.
There was just a whiff, maybe because she was so different from her sisters and seemed to have been treated differently. But it wasn’t something that I thought about much at all until it was revealed. I was surprised but not shocked.
It did not occur to me that she wasn't a Ravenel by birth. I was surprised when she read the letter and read that she wasn't Edmund's daughter.
I don't know why but I did think that she was Edmund's child through an affair making her still a Ravenel. It never occurred to me that she was not his child as I didn't think Edmund would keep a child that wasn't his.
