Helen enlists Garrett’s help to find her half sister, named Charity Wednesday, from the orphanage and bring her home. She makes plans for them to run away to avoid putting Rhys through a scandal and release him from his engagement obligation. Given her options, did she have other alternatives? Should she have told Rhys of her plans or was it in his best interests at the time?

Telling Rhys was an option, but she was pretty sure that wasn't going to end well. Staying put left her the object of Vance's blackmail. I thought that taking off for the country house bought her some time to at least talk to Kathleen and Devon and plan a long-term solution.

There was no way she could have told Rhys but luckily for her he was always one step ahead!

I have a different opinion. I felt that Helen should tell Rhys--may be in a letter. It would get everything out in the open, and Rhys would know he could trust Helen unequivocally.

I thought going to the country house was the first place that Vance would go. If she needed to hide, going to Kathleen. Even in her grief, Kathleen would help, and Devon would protect her.

I also thought she should have laid bare at Rhys’ feet. The worst he could have done was broken the engagement. He would have helped her go anywhere if he was unwilling to marry her.

I think she should have told Rhys everything. She expected him to break off the engagement when he found out, so why not tell him and get it over with?

Her other option was to go straight to Kathleen and Devon. Vance would quickly figure out that she was hiding in the country.

I don't think she really thought this part through. Yes, she did expect Rhys to break off the engagement, so why not tell him.
