Telling Rhys was an option, but she was pretty sure that wasn't going to end well. Staying put left her the object of Vance's blackmail. I thought that taking off for the country house bought her some time to at least talk to Kathleen and Devon and plan a long-term solution.
I have a different opinion. I felt that Helen should tell Rhys--may be in a letter. It would get everything out in the open, and Rhys would know he could trust Helen unequivocally. I thought going to the country house was the first place that Vance would go. If she needed to hide, going to Kathleen. Even in her grief, Kathleen would help, and Devon would protect her.
I also thought she should have laid bare at Rhys’ feet. The worst he could have done was broken the engagement. He would have helped her go anywhere if he was unwilling to marry her.
I think she should have told Rhys everything. She expected him to break off the engagement when he found out, so why not tell him and get it over with? Her other option was to go straight to Kathleen and Devon. Vance would quickly figure out that she was hiding in the country.
