Easton Skala (easton_skala) | 5 comments Feeling like a journey over the horizon, in ancient settings.

Something that brings the experience, the places, and/or the people they meet along the way alive, without getting too much into deeply purple prose.

Much obliged, in advance.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments you might try Steven Saylor's

The Seven Wonders (Ancient World, #1) by Steven Saylor

Mr. Saylor has the MC visiting all 7 of the wonders of the ancient world - a prequel to his Gordianus the Finder series

Coincidentally, I found that the same day I posted this question, but hadn't looked into it yet.

Pretty good?

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I enjoyed it. Saylor is a very good author. I just finished his third book in his Rome Trilogy that was excellent. Dominus: A Novel of the Roman Empire

A word of warning - there is a bit of bi sexual romance in it, if that is a concern.

There's also C. Stanley's A Rooster for Asklepios: A Slave's Story, Book 1 The main character journeys through ancient Asia Minor.

Written by a prof no less. Perfect, thank you!

Megan (oreodont) | 29 comments In case you're still interested in this topic, I really liked Over the Wine-Dark Sea Over the Wine-Dark Sea (Hellenic Traders, #1) by H.N. Turteltaub by Harry Turtledove/Turteltaub. It's the first of four books about a pair of cousins from Rhodes, set a little while after the death of Alexander the Great. They have a merchant ship and sail all over the Aegean. Turtledove is known for alternate history and fantasy, but these are straight historical fiction.

Daniel Pugsley | 12 comments Son of Babylon:

My book Son of Babylon is set in ancient Mesopotamia. The protagonist Bani ends up in places like Eshnunna and Assyria as well. He will travel even more widely in the sequels.

If I ever stop being interested in good examples of this, it will be a long time from now. Turtletaub/Turtledove's trader books are kind of bland overall, but jam packed with good material on ancient trade and travel. or at least the first two I've read so far are :)

FYI - the Amazon buy link on your book's Goodreads page is a broken link. I found it on Google, and added it to my queue to check out. Ancient Babylon doesn't get enough serious play IMO.
