This thread is to discuss Part 1 of The Well of Ascension which consists of Chapters 1-11!

How ready are you to start this book? What are your predictions for what we'll see?

I imagined never actually picking up this series or even picking it up at a wrong time and not liking it and what a disaster that would be.
I am SO excited, the second book is so far SO amazing, just like the first one. I could only express my love for the books in incomprehensible squeals and OHMYGODS, which are often my vocal reactions while reading this book.
I rather rarely fangirl about anything, but OHMYGOD.
This just in: crush on Elend confirmed.
I am happy about things falling into place, such as the Venture's kandra, which was mentioned once in the first book is seemingly going to play a big role now.
I am also very excited about the new mistborn in town and can't wait to see how that plays out.

I already read this one. This book is my favourite of the serie -and that is a lot to say because I love each one of them. I hope you guys enjoy it!

Oh, man. I knew Straff would be a thorn in Elend's side. But, sheesh! He wasted no time in this book.

Dang, there is so much to worry about now. What has Marsh learned about the daytime mists? Will OreSeur break the Contract? Two hostile armies? Who is Straff's kandra impersonating? What is the Watcher up to? Can Elend grow into the leader that is needed? Will the assembly jeopardize the city?

Loving it!

This book has so much awesome build up, foreshadowing and set up for the final one and we learn a lot and see a lot of great twists in this one too.

The first part is so action packed! I usually have difficulties with slow beginning but this is so fast paced. I enjoy it very much and the twist at the end of the first part - so curious.

I'll be starting this in a few days. Looking forward to reading it and hearing everyone's thoughts!

I think that is something Sanderson really does best: his action backing openings and how he just engages you from start to finish!

The political intrigue in this book is just so good! I love all those questions you are asking! I admit, when I was reading the book I just went with the flow and didn't really try to figure everything out, but I love how you're already trying to puzzle it all together :D

I've already read it as well! It is super fun reading comments and seeing what people think so far, especially knowing how it all ends!

Ohhh, I love Elend too! I found that he was a character I could really connect to, and I think he has some of the BEST character development in the entire trilogy!

Just finished part one and aaaah I forgot how much I loved Vin (this is a re-read for me). Her character development is just insane even though she still goes back on some habits. But I love how relatable that is and to know that change takes a lot of time.

Breeze is just awesome! You can always count on him for some humour. :)

Loving this book. Vin's character keeps getting better. Another Mistborn in the mist? Hmm interesting. But I keep thinking that we are going to run into Vin's brother. There was no confirmation that he was dead. Loving Eland as well. Ok, getting off of here to get the the 2nd part lol.

So who do you think the imposter is?

I'm intrigued to find out who the "watcher" Mistborn is, and why he said he was the enemy but was helping Vin. And now we have a potential imposter among the core group ... DUN DUNN DUNNNNN!!!

I'm loving this book so far but I'm still in denial about Kelsier I just don't know how they will do without him. I'm so intrigued be the watcher and surprised by another kandra because it also makes me sad that another major part of the crew could be dead and I love them all! I sort of had a feeling that Marsh was a kandra but he hasn't been to keep venture but I am still apprehensive about him because of the way his mannerisms were described. Overall I'm loving this book and it's great to be back on to this world again!

Enjoying the start of this book.

Again like the first book we get a nice build up to some new mysteries that keep you wanting to read. Who is the Watcher? Whats are the new metals capable of? Who is the impostor?

I haven't quite clued on to the info we get at the start of each chapter yet, so not sure if I have missed something but again like The Final Empire a nice way to help build the world and it's history

I Like how Sazed is questioning the Lord Rulers demise and the effect it has had on the people and the Land and whether it was actually in the long run for the best.

Also personally I'm a little concerned about the changes to Marsh and I have a feeling that he might play an important role. But for who I'm not too sure just yet?

Oh my gosh this series! Only 15% of the way through and there is already so much to think about and take in! I love it.
Who is the kendra impersonating? I have a feeling that it is going to be someone we all love in another horrible plot twist which I now come to expect from Sanderson.
Who is the watcher? I am at an absolute lost for this one!
What is up with Marsh? I am scared that all of his changes means he is going to betray them at some point :(

like I said before, there is just so much going on and I always look into everything more deeply than I probably should, for example when Vin pointed out a Terris women who she didn't recognise.
But I am obviously really loving it!! On to the next part :)

So many questions on this first part already! D:
What's up with Marsh, Breeze and Elend's father? Who is the Watcher?
But this first part was so fast paced, it got me super excited already! And remembered me on how much I love Vin's character development, she's amazing! <3
I just wish I didn't had to work so I cpuld read this book all day long. :(

Inspite of the fight Vin had with the Allomancers, I thought the book was a little bit slow going in the beginning. On the other hand it gave an excellent look in the aftermath of what is usually the end of a saga: The evil lord is dead, the good guy gets the throne and the girl...
But obviously, it's not that easy - on none of those issues ;-)


About the new metals: I'm a little bit concerned that it seems to make Vin a bit too powerful. On the other hand, it does immediately burn out the metal she's using, so I suppose there will be some kind of balance there.

I second that. We still know next to nothing about how he was created/changed, so I suppose it might be plausible to assume that he is still changing...?

The other character I'm worried about is the kandra. Vin should really try to get used to him. And I don't like it when Elend and the others always use the contract as the perfect proof of its loyalty. I mean, even assuming that no kandra has ever broken or will ever break their contract - I'm quite sure that you could easily work around it by using "literal interpretations" of a command and other means. It's not that I really distrust him (yet), but I imaging that there might be some potential conflict in the future...

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book since the big bad was already defeated in book one. But it seems the Lord Ruler was just a small part of a larger picture. I'm really enjoying this book so far.

I didn't love this section in the beginning; it took a little while to get going for me. I think this is because it focused so heavily on Vin and she has slipped back into so of her annoying habits that had finally started to change at the end of the last book!!

The twist at the end!!! So excited to keep reading now! I am also super worried that one of the crew is dead. I don't know if my heart can take that after Kel.

I am also super worried about Marsh. I think his character is going to play a way larger part, and I am worried it might be in a villain
capacity.

I also agree about OreSeur. I feel that Vin and him need to do some relationship building and trust exercises. ;) Maybe some trust falls?

Any one have any predictions on who the watcher could be. My secret and irrational heart is hoping for Kel reincarnated...

I had trouble enjoying the first part too. Maybe I should have just started reading this book right after Mistborn, when I was still super excited… However, the new kandra has certainly sparked that old excitement and I'm sure I'll be hooked again soon.

OreSeur is definitely an interesting character too. I do wonder if at some point he will find a loophole in the contract or something like that. Or if he turns out to be more invested and do something extroardinary beyond the rules of his contract instead…

And I'm wondering… If a kandra eats a misting, it doesn't get it's powers right? So if he were to have eaten a misting on the team that would eventually be the way to find out who it is...

I am LOVING this series so much!! But is anybody else a little sad they didn't get to see the year between book one and two? I am extremely interested in what happened during that year to set up a new government, start Vin and Elend's relationship, and watch Kelsier's crew find their new place in their new world. But I see why it was necessary to exclude this part of the story.

I am really enjoying the balance between focusing on the threat facing Luthadel right now (armies, economy, government, etc.) with this subtle idea that there is something much more dangerous coming. It's like a dark shadow is gently creeping over the page as I'm reading. I get the feeling our heroes have something much more dangerous to face ahead of them.

Wow! Maybe I don't read as much fantasy as you guys because that part was not slow. The tension throughout the whole part was epic. That cliffhanger at the end...woah! I really love learning more Allomancy and I hope that continues. OreSeur is such an interesting character. I agree with you Samantha, I love his sass!
