Hello fellow Constant Readers and happy summer! I feel like we can all collectively let out a sigh of relief that summer is finally upon us. To kick it off right we decided to go with a short story collection that we've featured here before because we figured while you're hanging by the pool, going to the beach, or even just sitting in the AC (because let's get real...it's already hot) a short story here and there would work best for everyone's schedules. Plus, it fits in nicely with BooksandLala's Buzzword Readathon's prompt for June which is a book with "ALL" on the cover.
Published in 2002, Everything's Eventual (14 Dark Tales) includes a collection of 11 short stories and 3 novellas. They are as follows:
-"Autopsy Room Four" -"The Man in the Black Suit" -"All That You Love Will Be Carried Away" -"The Death of Jack Hamilton" -"In the Deathroom" -"The Little Sisters of Eluria" -"Everything's Eventual" -"L. T.'s Theory of Pets" -"The Road Virus Heads North" -"Lunch at the Gotham Café" -"That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French" -"1408" -"Riding the Bullet" -"Luckey Quarter"
He created this collection by compiling multiple short stories he had submitted for publication across various magazines through the years into one big bind up.
My personal favorites in this collection are "Lunch at the Gotham Cafe", "The Road Virus Heads North", "The Little Sisters of Eluria", and of course "1408". Although I will say, my first read through of this I skipped "The Little Sisters of Eluria" until I was ready to read it in my Dark Tower journey. If you haven't at least read up through the fourth book, "Wizard and Glass", I highly recommend you hold off on reading this. Although chronologically it takes place before the entire series, a lot of this short story won't make sense unless you get the back story from "Wizard and Glass".
As far as I could find, only two of these stories have had adaptations. In 2004 Mick Garris made a direct to video version of "Riding the Bullet". In 2007, "1408" was released starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. It currently sits at a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and is one of my favorite mid 2000's psychological horror/thriller movies. Super solid adaptation.
