The French authorities are unwilling to investigate Sophie’s death, even refusing to categorize it as a murder. What suppositions did you make at the time?

I thought that the Bourbons were behind it because of the grudge that Marie Theresa has against Sebastian. Also, Sophie was on the wrong side of the monarchy.

Agreed! I actually believed they may have had something to do with her murder, especially her little henchman Xavier de Teulet.

Because the authorities were very quick to dismiss her death as an accident, I thought it was because Sophie was English and not high on the Bourbon's list of acceptable people.

Anita, She was acceptable for a time but she did fall out of grace. That's for sure.

I think she was accepted because she was with McClellan and he was vital to Napoleon. With Napoleon gone, the Bourbons really didn't like her.
