I finished and gave it three stars, but can admit that it might have been four if I had read instead of listened. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just checked out your review and while the narrator did not bother me, looking at it in retrospect, I can see what you mean.
One thing that affects the tone and experience I have with audiobooks is the speed I listen to them at. Regular speed is too slow - in this case I listened at 2.3x. There are times where I think high speed may have taken a bit away, but in this case it may have helped with some of the things that bothered you. What speed do you listen at?

I generally just listen at 1X. I have sped it up a couple of times, but always feel I may be missing something as far as expression goes, so get nervous and end up turning it back.

I am to the point where if it is below 1.75x it sounds like snails talking . . . at first it seems way too fast, but I got used to it.
There are some books where my mind does drift, but I blame the quality of the story for failing to keep my interest more than the speed! :)

Wow that's fast! I usually listen at 1.25x but if I really wanna' get through it I'll pump it up maybe a notch or two but never do 2 or more.

Same, same! I probably average 1.75-2, depending on the narrator. The one and only time I go any lower is when I WANT to fall asleep...I have a few old favorites who have nice soothing narrator voices and are basically like sleep hypnosis if I turn the speed down to 1x :)
