Pet Sematary is a 1983 horror novel by American writer Stephen King. The novel was nominated for a World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1984, and adapted into two films: one in 1989 and another in 2019.

Blurb:
When the Creeds move into a beautiful old house in rural Maine, it all seems too good to be true: physician father, beautiful wife, charming little daughter, adorable infant son-and now an idyllic home. As a family, they've got it all...right down to the friendly car. But the nearby woods hide a blood-chilling truth-more terrifying than death itself-and hideously more powerful. The Creeds are going to learn that sometimes dead is better.

had just finished a repeat read 2 months ago.
my first read at rhe age of 12 or so was most impressive.
I would recommend all ( though it's too late for most of us ) to read books as far as possible at an impressionable age- the thrill is much more.

I may join as well. This book has been on my TBR for quite some time. I am a bit skeptical about Stephen King books though. My debut SK book Bag of Bones was a total flop. I hope Pet Sematary turns out to be a better book.

Gorab, the poster looks terrific!

Austin George | 4220 comments I started reading this book. So far I am finding it very dull and drab. I am finding the characters and their conversations wacky, mundane and uninteresting. No jokes and nothing witty in the writing to hold my interest. The descriptions are very boring as well. I think Stephen King books are not for me. 2nd time he has disappointed me. I so want to like his books because of his huge popularity with both Indians and Westerners, but it's not working for me. I will read some more chapters. If still uninteresting I am going to DNF this book.

Hello Austin,
I've read only a couple of them - The Shining and The Body.
Both were pretty good. But I get your point. Its a different kind of writing. Its a hit or miss with most folks.
I'm never much intrigued by his books yet. Though the films based on his books are among my all time favs - Shawshank, Green Mile...

Maybe some day, I'd love to explore more by him.

Gorab, I am intrigued by some of his horror books but none seem to be working out for me. It's his writing style that irks me.

I loved watching The Shawshank Redemption. The Green Mile was okayish for me.

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7194 comments I've given up on him. there was a time way bs k in my early teens that I couldn't sleep and had nightmares after reading Pet Semetary, Carrie and IT. recently, when I tried again I couldn't get through 50 pages. I just chalked it down to growing up and increased maturity .

I didn't find the revenant, Victor Pascow, in Pet Sematary scary at all.

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7194 comments I read it when I was 12. I shuddered every night till my mom put an absolute ban on my reading of horror novels. yet, I followed it with Carrie and that wa even more terrifying for me. now, nothing horrifies me much.

Even if it's not scary it's fine as long as the story is interesting. But Pet Sematary failed on all fronts for me.

Austin George | 4220 comments From my review.

I can't take it anymore. I am DNFing this book. I literally felt sleepy multiple times while reading this book. Stephen King has a very bland style of writing. The story proceeds in a monotonous manner, descriptions are a pain to read, the characters are unlikeable and their conversations are dull. This book was as boring as Bag of Bones, if not more. I will still keep trying his other popular books in future but I have a feeling that Stephen King books are not for me. I should just watch the movie adaptations of his books I guess.

P.S. : I can't believe majority of the people in my lengthy friends list have given this book 4 or 5 stars. Very few have given it 2 stars. I am the only one to give it a one star. Haha. I don't usually give 1 stars but this book was unbelievably boring and a torture to get through. My engineering college textbooks were better than this.

Yup, his horror books are not scary for adults.

Visalakshi (vishu-potter) | 231 comments Stephen King is the last candy in an assorted bag! It can turn out to be delicious or just spoil everything for you. I have read a couple of King's books and I have a different opinion about each of them. Some I found interesting, others I just couldn't read. Had to power through. I guess it's more or less same for everyone when it comes to King.
I've read his Carrie, IT, Insomnia, Dolores Claiborne, Green Mile.

22/11/63 was decent and readable but I had to shelve it for the time being as it's a huge book. But his Bag of Bones and Pet Sematary were unbelievably boring. I can't understand why so many people are crazy about SK books especially the Western readers. Everywhere I see them raving about his books, be it on FB book groups, blogs or on GR. So much so that I was in awe of him but when I finally read his books I was bitterly disappointed. On the other hand Indians have more craze for Haruki Murakami than SK it seems . Haha. I am yet to read a Murakami.

Book started decently, likable but it was too slow and too much build up for me. The dreams that were there to scare the reader, all I felt was sleepy. Then the cat came back, scary on different covers but to me it was very house pet till the climax.

Book picked up from me after the srcond funeral but ig was too late

*book picked up for me after the second funeral but it was too late by then. I already wanted to get it over with.

He has always been a hit or miss author for me. And this was a big miss for me.

@Austin - Murakami is weird but fantastic. If you are planning to read him, start with Norwegian Woods as its free of his "magical touch". Hence easy to grasp albeit sad.
