1. Afghanistan
Independence Day is a public holiday in Afghanistan on August 19th and is Afghanistan's National Day and commemorates independence from Britain influence on this day in 1919. There are official speeches and military displays in the capital city of Kabul. Afghanistan has a concept regarding its national celebrations, called 'jeshn'. From 1919 to 1973, the jeshn celebrated the anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from Britain's influence.
🌐 Read a book set in Afghanistan or read a book that have 2 of the following numbers in the page count 1973 or that the author's initials can be found in AFGHANISTAN.
2. Antigua and Barbuda
Independence day is a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda on November 1st. It marks independence from the United Kingdom on this day in 1981. 3. Bahamas
Bahamian Independence Day is celebrated on July 10th and celebrates independence from United Kingdom in 1973. On August 15, 1947, three century-long British rule over India came to an end. Billions of people in India commemorate the historic event by adorning their houses, offices, and schools with the color of Indian flag. The celebration is also a time when families gather to watch the annual flag hoisting ceremony, broadcasted live from the Red Fort in New Delhi. For Indians, kite flying symbolizes freedom. All over the country, the holiday is marked by parades, concerts, and parties.

Lots of different countries celebrate Independence Day so I thought we could have a look at a few of the countries beside the USA that have an independence day.
Duration: 3 months from start date. Each task can be done as many times as you like.
Level 1 3- 10 tasks
Level 2 11 or more
TASKS
Independence day is a popular holiday on the islands with events such as food fairs, sports competitions, dance festivals, art and craft exhibitions held during the weeks in the lead up to Independence Day. On Independence Day, the Prime Minister makes an address to the nation followed by a grand ceremonial parade.
🌐 Read a book set on an island or read a book published in November of any year or read a book that the author's initials can be found in ANTIGUA / BARBUDA.
3. Bahamas
Bahamian Independence Day is celebrated on July 10th and celebrates independence from United Kingdom in 1973. The British House of Lords voted to give The Bahamas its independence on 22 June 1973 but it was July 10th 1973 before the documents were delivered to to Prime Minister Lynden Pindling by Prince Charles.
🌐 Read a book published in July of any year or read a book with a character called Charles or read a book where the authors initials can be found in BAHAMAS.
4. India (August 15)
All over the country, the skies are dotted with countless kites of various shapes and shades flown from the rooftops.
🌐 Read a book with a red cover or read a book with a flag on the cover (Show cover) or read a book set in India.
5. Ghana (March 6)
When Ghana gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, it became the first African country to do so. Today, the country commemorates the historic event annually with fireworks, parades, and marches. But, the celebrations are not complete without street parties and jams, a uniquely Ghanaian tradition.
🌐 Read a book that has fireworks on the cover (Show cover.) or read a book where a character attends a parade or read a book where the authors initials can be found in GHANA.
6. Mexico (September 15)
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Mexicans observe Independence Day in September to memorialize the Grito de Dolores – the battle cry of the Mexican War of Independence uttered by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest from the small town of Dolores. All over the country, the holiday is marked by parades, concerts, and parties.
🌐 Read a book that is fifth in a series or a book set in Mexico or where the authors initials can be found in DOLORES.
7. Philippines (June 2)
A flag-raising ceremony traditionally kicks off the Araw ng Kalayaan celebration in the Philippines. The holiday is a time dedicated to family bonding. Filipinos enjoy lively, food-filled gatherings with foods, family and friends to commemorate the day when Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from centuries-long Spanish rule.
🌐 Read a book about family or read a book tagged culinary or where the authors initials can be found in ARAW NG KALAYAAN.
8. France (July 14)
Every year, the French celebrate their country’s independence from oppressive royal tyranny on July 14 – the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. The day kicks off with a military parade on Champs-Élysées. It is a France-wide tradition in which fire stations open their doors to the public for dancing, drinking, and partying. The firefighters are dressed-up in their uniforms, and occasionally, they perform some live demonstrations to entertain the guests.
🌐 Read a book set in France or where a character is a firefighter or which the authors initials can be found in MILITARY PARADE.
9. Indonesia (August 17)
In the morning, the eyes of all Indonesians are on the National Palace, where a solemn flag ceremony is held to honor the republic. High school students from all over the country are carefully selected by the government to do the honor of hoisting the flag. Immediately after the ceremony, neighborhoods gear up for street fests which usually include fun games and music concerts.
🌐 Read a book with a character who is in high school, or read a book where a character gets a honor or an award, or read a book where the authors initials can be found in STREET FESTS.
10. Australia (January 26)
Festivals, concerts, family gatherings, regattas, picnics and barbecues are the typical observances carried out by Australians to remember the first unfurling of the British flag at Sydney Cove. Each city celebrates in their own way. Sydney does so with the world-renowned boat races; Perth with a colossal firework show; Melbourne holds a People’s March, to celebrate the diversity of the nation.
🌐 Read a book set in Australia or where a character attends a concert or where the authors initials can be found in SYDNEY, PERTH MELBOURNE.
