Nice review. I read this a long time ago and enjoyed it. The book list at the end introduced me to what at the time were new but have become long-time favorite authors (in addition to King).

This book is a combination of a memoir and a guide to writing well. King begins with a Curriculum Vitae, recounting his childhood, family, and the hurdles he faced. He moves on to the craft of writing, which provides tips and techniques, and answers some of the questions he has repeatedly been asked. He finishes with a personal story of getting hit by a car and its relationship to finalizing this book.
The memoir (C.V.) section delves into his life – how he became a writer and his struggles with addictions. This section portrays the rocky road to success. At first, I wondered where this section was headed, but I trusted that it would eventually become apparent, and it did. I enjoyed the second part the most. It provides King’s personal advice about the process of writing. Not only does this part cover the mechanics of writing, but it is surprisingly humorous. He offers examples of both the good and the bad. The third part is short and satisfies curiosity about the accident that almost killed him.
I will not attempt to summarize all the tips, but one of my favorites is “Read a lot and write a lot.” Though it is targeted at fiction, King’s advice can be used in any type of writing. One does not need to be a fan of Stephen King’s books to appreciate his insights. It is filled with useful information, some of which I had read elsewhere. It will appeal to anyone interested in becoming a better writer.
“Writing is magic, as much the water of life as any other creative art. The water is free. So drink. Drink and be filled up.”
