FWIW, the Briggs translation seems to follow the numbering of the Pevear translation. So for those of us going for the Penguin "exquisitely accessible" version, the Pevear analogues to Maude should work!
Some translations explain the variations of Russian names, but others don't, and sometimes the explanations aren't comprehensive enough to be helpful. For anyone interested in a dedicated survey of naming practices, see the Wikipedia article on "Eastern Slavic Naming Customs."It is kind of long, but I wish it had been available when I was reading War and Peace in High School and College.

For anyone who's interested, the entire Russian movie with English subtitles is available on YouTube for free. It's the one that's directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, and it's over 7 hours long! The book has so many characters, and it can be helpful to see them, I think. I've only watched the first few minutes, but I plan on slowly watching all of it as I read, or maybe I'll just go crazy and binge it in December when I'm done, lol. :)

This is an excellent movie!! I saw it when it premiered in the US in the late 60s. At over 7 hours, it was shown in two separate weeks.

Oh that's right, James! I forgot I saw it on HBO Max the other day. Good to know, Karen! I'd hate to invest over seven hours into a bad movie, lol. :)

I just started reading it, and so far I'm really enjoying it."
Yes, I've been reading it along with War and Peace, and I agree with you it is an enjoyable and an easy read.

Thanks for getting all this started Karen. I was a little out of service recently.
If you want to add Constance Garnett (Translation Date-1904) to the list, it follows the same format as the Maude translation except that "books" are referred to as "parts" Parts and chapters only. No mention of books or volumes.
That's the one I'm reading.
