I now they all like the Outsiders. I will ask her about some other more modern books as well.

There is a group called Middle Grade Madness where you might get good recommendations. Kadi, the mod, is really nice.
Maybe some comics might be to their liking:Non-fiction:
The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. It's already divided in four books.
There is also the March Trilogy by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.
Almost American Girl by Robin Ha.
Smile, Sisters or Guts by Raina Telgemeier.

I teach in Kentucky. Most of the kids always like Jason Reynolds books and a few will pick up the Hunger Games. Thanks, these look great
