Anne C (fizzyannielizzy) | 1 comments Happy Amazon Prime Day! Remember, EVERYTHING* is STILL **FREE** at the library! *Furniture and similar not included (not for borrow or sale)

Welcome to Week 3 - Other Worlds (Fantasy & Sci-fi)! Here's the list of suggestions we put together, but we always want to hear your faves and what you're currently reading!

Skin of the Sea
On Fragile Waves
Noor
House of Sky and Breath
Moon Witch, Spider King
Book of Night (Kate is mad at me because I still haven't gotten around to this one... I'm sorry Kate!!! It's sitting in my audio library!)
Where the Drowned Girls Go
Under the Whispering Door
Fugitive Telemetry
Sea of Tranquility
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars
Recursion
Dune
The Book of Magic
The Employees

Side note: If any of you have been waiting 500 years for the sequel to Ninth House (as Kate and I have), good news! There's finally a release date and terrifying cover! Hell Bent Poll: Real rabbit, or rabbit sculpture?

I hope we'll see some of you this Wednesday at our special SRC Book Club event at Emack & Bolio's! Imagine! Seeing people IRL! The novelty! (Also, don't worry, we'll be seated outside!)

Kathleen | 71 comments I'm planning to read The House in the Cerulean Sea. Also, I bet that rabbit's not real! Art is wild lately.

message 3: by Selena (new)

Selena | 8 comments I'm reading A Day Like This by Kelley McNeil which got me out of a reading slump! About 75% done and really liking it so far. It's actually a lot better than it sounds from the description.

message 4: by Diana (new)

Diana | 84 comments I liked Book of Night, but not as much as some of Black's other books (Curse Workers 5ever). The book I finished today, Bitter, is a contemporary but otherworldly story; I also didn't enjoy it quite as much as its predecessor, Pet.

Anne C (fizzyannielizzy) | 1 comments In my mind I can't stop seeing the way the rabbit's foot pokes out through the N...

message 6: by Mirkat (new)

Mirkat | 276 comments I finished This Time Tomorrow this morning, and I love it so hard! I can hardly wait to discuss it tomorrow evening at the Summer Reading Book Club meeting.

message 7: by Julia (last edited Jul 15, 2022 08:30AM) (new)

Julia | 7 comments Finished Memphis this week, great beach read. And just finished Motherhood which I absolutely loved. Something about Sheila Heti's writing style just really speaks to me.

message 8: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodysquadere) | 80 comments I finished “The Husbands” this morning. Fun and witty reversal of “The Stepford Wives”.
I reread Dune on audio before the movie came out. Well worth the return and far better than the movies. I’m now in the middle of “ Iona Iverson Rules for Commuting “ by Clare Dooley. Reminds me of my old NYC commutes on LIRR! But in a fun, non stressful way!

message 9: by Kathryn (last edited Jul 13, 2022 06:48AM) (new)

Kathryn (chasingllamas) | 5 comments Dune is on my list, I've been holding off of seeing the movie because I want to read the book first!
I finished The Girls Weekend by Jody Gehrman, I read it in 2 days - that's a quick turnaround for me. I just borrowed Runner by Tracy Clark from the libby app :)

I really enjoyed that book. One of my favorites this year

I did not even know there was a SRC book club event. (Where have I been?) I am having a last dinner at The Kitchen Table with a friend tonight. Maybe we will wander over to Emack's at some point.

message 13: by Jaybee (new)

Jaybee | 78 comments I finished Last Summer at the Golden Hotel, which is as good timing since I’ll be in the Catskills this weekend! It was a good beach reach. I sat at the beach all day, but struggled to get into Notes on an Execution. I feel obligated to continue on because it’s a pick for one of my book clubs.

Registered! Another book on my TBR pile.

Alicia (readersbeadvised) | 124 comments Yesterday I read the "choose your own adventure" story written and illustrated by Laurel Snyder and Dan Santat that's a fairytale mashup called Endlessly Ever After: Pick Your Path to Countless Fairy Tale Endings! via Hoopla. You get to choose which direction you want to go in and she encounters everyone from Hansel and Gretel to Sleeping Beauty. (I went through the ENTIRE book even though my adventures didn't take me to every page because the illustrations were phenomenal).

Mya Burns | 10 comments I read Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune! Absolutely loved it, thanks for the recommendation!

This sounds like a lot of fun and perhaps something I should look for in print format.

message 19: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kellml289) | 30 comments Also finished I’d like to play alone please this week 😊

message 20: by Diana (new)

Diana | 84 comments I finished Devil House this morning. I appreciate Darnielle books but I'm not sure I'd say I enjoy them.

message 21: by Mirkat (new)

Mirkat | 276 comments I finished Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language this morning. I love it and recommend it to my fellow word nerds!

message 22: by Jaybee (new)

Jaybee | 78 comments In a nod to the sci theme I read Aurora by David Koepp. The pacing was a little odd, but it was a entertaining. I also read The Counselors and Notes on an Execution. I love all of the reading time I have on vacation!

This sounds like a must read!!! I love a "choose your own adventure!" Why don't they write them for adults?! Or DO they???

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan D'Entremont (susande) | 286 comments Was late to work today because I had to finish On Fragile Waves from this list, I wouldn't consider it sci-fi or fantasy. A little bit of the supernatural. But it was mainly a realistic fiction book with lovely writing by the author.

message 27: by Jane (new)

Jane | 33 comments Just finished The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth and enjoyed it!
