For all those planning on taking part in August's book read please post your idea of what you want to read. We will vote on it and post it by August 25th.

I looked him up here on goodreads last night and it didn't seem like he has written anything new.

He has finished his second book which is set in a rainforest. And he is working on his third book.

Okay everyone who is going to be reading in the August Book of the Month group read, please vote on the book and let's see what we will be reading.
One book per person, one vote per person please.

My vote is for Carnivore by Justin Boote

message 12: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
It's the 1st of August and so far I'm the only one who’s voted for any book. I gather that no one is interested in a group read this month or they only want to read the book or books they put up.
If there isn't a concensus for a book this month we can try next month or drop monthly group reads altogether.
What do you want to do??

message 13: by Tristan (new)

Tristan Hutchinson | 460 comments Mod
Maybe try another month in case people are busier during the summer. Personally I’m on vacation this week.

message 14: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
That's what I planned on doing Tristan. I'm just trying to help keep the different things going with our group. ; )

To those that are interested there will be a August Group read.
We will be reading Roe v Wade by Matt Shaw. We will be starting it on Monday for those that wish to join us.

message 17: by inciminci (new)

inciminci I'm really excited to read this, it is my first Matt Shaw! I have read the introduction and I like it, I think he's funny too!

message 18: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
He's extremely graphic, but at times it makes it funny. So we will start Monday if that sounds good for you and whoever will be joining us?

message 19: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Lapp | 8 comments I am ready to get reading! Looking forward to reading your thoughts Monday! :)

So then everyone except Sassy who will start a few days later is ready for August's book of the month. Let's try to keep it slow for the first couple of days so Sassy can catch up with us. Say 10% a day, then depending on how it's going up it to 15%.
Please post your comments here, plus you can also post them on your own page if you care to. Happy gruesome reading everyone!!

message 22: by inciminci (new)

inciminci OK, so I made 20% but I won't get into too much detail if you guys are before that - I am not US-American and don't live there, so I was really happy Shaw put a historically accurate explanation about the titular case. Of course we hear about it, but it was good to read how it came to be.
I thought the opening scene with the women who are being force fed through the serum in their veins and they are tied up, it was a really, absolutely TERRIFYING scene! The way the world goes, I wouldn't be surpeised if this came true.
I like the short sections, they keep my attention. So far it's not really "extreme" yet though, is it?

message 23: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Lapp | 8 comments I forced myself to stop at 10% so I don't get too far ahead, but I agree with you inciminci. The beginning was quite disheartening and nerve wracking. I do live in the US - luckily not in Texas, and our current governor plans to keep our rights. However, with states being able to change the restrictions, it is scary to see how our laws will play out when new politicians get into office!

message 24: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
I agree with both inciminci and Elizabeth on the informative beginning, it's helpful for those who don't live in the USA.
I also stopped at 10% give or take a page or two. The way Matt Shaw takes it only 10 years into the future from now and has what seems like every female whether they want the pregnancy or not are just chattel to the governments laws scares me because of what is going on with our different states laws, who knows how far places like Texas and Mississippi are willing to remove a women's rights.

Elizabeth Lapp | 8 comments Kara, I noticed you have Porn by Matt Shaw on your TBR. Please let me know if/when you read this! This was my first Matt Shaw book and I really liked it (I guess I am a sicko haha). I am interested in your thoughts! :)

i’ve read a handful of his books. so far Sick Bastards and Monster (Monster has a warning on the beginning of the page) has been the most disturbing ones i’ve read.

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
I would guess that all of us are sort of 'sickos', lots of people would look at reading Matt Shaw as a sickness.....lol

Hoo ho ho, Hee hee hee, their coming to take me away haa haa, to the funny farm where life is beautiful all the time.
The beginning lyrics from a very old song. Now if I could just remember the name of it. It's only about 50 years old.

message 34: by inciminci (new)

inciminci Oooh, I really like the neuroticfish cover!!!

message 35: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Lapp | 8 comments @Sassy Sedusa - I have read Porn and How much to...? from him thus far. Both had those disclaimers in the beginning. There is a specific scene from How much to...? that still makes me gag when I think about it! I am trying to get brave to read the sequel - How much 2. I will have to add Monster and Sick Bastards to my list!

@Kara - I am glad I have found my people! haha. It's nice to know I am not the only 'sicko' out there! These extreme books are my guilty pleasure for sure! Which is hilarious considering I am not usually a fan of horror/gory movies. I can read about this stuff all day, but I can't watch it!

message 36: by inciminci (new)

inciminci I can't always read extreme horror, but sometimes it feels kind of purifying, I don't know if that's the right word.

message 37: by Sassy Sedusa (new)

Sassy Sedusa | 240 comments Mod
@Elizabeth- have to add those two you’ve mentioned.

@Inciminci- not sure when i got into extreme horror but now that’s all i want to read. lol
i like that it’s raw and not sugar coated. i like when authors don’t hold back, if that makes sense?

message 38: by inciminci (new)

inciminci @Sassy - yeah it makes sense, I know what you mean. Are there any other authors you'd recommend? I know just a few; Sea Caummisar, Jack Ketchum, Moe Teratos and a few publishing houses who sell German authors.

message 39: by Sassy Sedusa (new)

Sassy Sedusa | 240 comments Mod
i’m kinda new to the scene and mostly read Matt Shaw so far. i did read one Jack Ketchum book years ago. The Girl Next Door. it fucked me up a little while i was reading. it’s the type of book that makes you want to scream and throw the book across the room. lol
i did hear some people say Edward Lee is good. never read anything by him. (tho i did finish a book with 9 authors working together and Edward Lee was one of the authors. it was ok but that the way it ended. lmao)
sorry i can’t be much help.
try googling extreme horror authors and see what pops up.

message 40: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
And before asking me Sassy was the one who got me into extreme horror when she recommended for the July book read the sick bastard trilogy by Matt Shaw
After reading it I just had to pick up several more ebooks by him. There is one more author, he's a friend who has put out 2 extreme horror under his pen name J. Boote. I've read one of them, they are novella length and I don't think you should have problems getting them in Europe as he lives in Barcelona
I'm not going to give anything away today on the book we're reading, I'll just say I'm at 24%. It's not easy to stop reading, I keep telling myself just 1 more page and then I end up 2 or 3 % ahead of where I should have stopped.

message 41: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Lapp | 8 comments I also quit at 22%. I am just waiting to comment further too! :)

message 42: by Sassy Sedusa (new)

i’m still waiting for my book! 😡😭
you guys are really making me want to read it.

I found a way to find extreme horror books. I went to my Amazon account and did a search for extreme horror books. it brought up lots and lots of them.

my book arrived right now! i’m excited to dive in.
sadly i have errands to run so can’t atm.
i will catch up with soon.

message 45: by inciminci (last edited Aug 24, 2022 12:41PM) (new)

inciminci Thanks for the recs and I will try the trick with amazon too, Kara!
I have read a good chunk today and at 52% (view spoiler).

But that was just an aside, when Sassy has caught up we can then talk about the 20% or so.

message 46: by Sassy Sedusa (new)

Sassy Sedusa | 240 comments Mod
errands finished, dinner done.
finally, time to relax and get started with this book.

message 47: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) | 176 comments Mod
I wish the book was a bit longer, I’m up to Chapter 12, which is page 43 but 44%. I agree inciminci, the incinerator scene while she's still alive starts putting it into the extreme category.
Now it looks like it's going to start following the stories of the 2 couples, one of which is already in the white room.

As a question for the future, does everyone want to stick with extreme horror group reads in the future? I've found lots of them listed in Amazon and have picked up quite a few more already. You can see them in my want to reads, but for me since I read on kindles the books don't cost as much as buying the actual book. So let me know, I can set up 2 different group reads also. One for extreme horror and one for other genres.

i’m finished

message 49: by Elizabeth (new)

i would just type caution ⚠️ 🛑 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!⚠️🛑 lol

i liked the book. i like all his books! despite it being fictional it hit me in the feels. i was on the second chapter and wanted to throw the book across the room, it made me that upset. lol
still haven’t given it a rating as i’m still processing things.
