I Forgot the Name of That ___! discussion

I remember reading a book when I was younger with a cat named 'purry motor'. I have no other helpful information except I think that it was set during the 1800s some time, in a vaguely prairie setting. There was a young girl and she might've had siblings, but I'm not sure. I've had this bit stuck in my head for ages and I just want to know where it's from!
