The bay is on Lake Tahoe at the border of California and Nevada. Trees surround the water as far as the eyes can see. The area is the resting place for many boats, launches and barges used in the lake before the turn of the century, during the heyday of Emerald Bay Resort and used in the construction of Vikingsholm.

2. Lake Superior
Split Rock lighthouse towering over the cliffs of Lake Superior on the Minnesota bank. Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes, making it the largest lake in the United States.

3. Crater Lake
The lake is literally a lake in a volcanic crater that filled with water over time. Widely known for its rich blue color and extreme clarity, which averages 102 ft (31m) deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. The Old Man is a 30-foot mountain hemlock log with three feet exposed above water. It is the focal point of Crater Lake National Park, atop the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon.

4. Lake Powell
Probably the most unique lake in the United States is Lake Powell, a manmade reservoir along the Colorado River at the border of Utah and Arizona. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, and hiking. Prepared campgrounds can be found at each marina, but many visitors choose to rent a houseboat or bring their own camping equipment, find a secluded spot somewhere in the canyons, and make their own camp.

5. Lake McDonald
It is the largest of the many glacier lakes in Glacier National Park in Montana. The lake was formed by Ice Age glaciers carving out the basin millions of years ago. Built in 1913, the historic Lake McDonald lodge has a picturesque location on the eastern shore of the lake with 82 guest rooms split between the three-story main lodge, a row of cabins, Snyder Hall and the exquisite Cobb House.

6. Lake Champlain
This lake is situated along the New York-Vermont-Quebec border. It is fairly remote, making it one of the more serene spots. Lake Champlain is sometimes referred to as "The Sixth Great Lake". Coast Guard Station Burlington provides "Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement and Ice Rescue services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year".

Near Aspen, Colorado, the lake is famous for its reflections of the Maroon Bells mountains. Though the most photographed place in Colorado, this small lake can only be reached by foot.

10. Lake Okeechobee
Is also known as Florida's Inland Sea is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida. It borders the Everglades of southern Florida. The lake has a unique topography and is known for its superior fishing and is home to more than 40 species of native fish. The lake is enclosed by a 40 feet (12 m) high Herbert Hoover Dike built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after a hurricane in 1928 breached the old dike, flooding surrounding communities and claiming at least 2,500 lives.

11. The Great Salt Lake
Located in Utah, it is the largest saltwater lake in the United States (and in the Western Hemisphere). It's known for the incredible pink and white salt reservoirs that form along its shores.

This is an alpine lake in the Northern Cascade Mountain Range, is situated at the base of Mount Rainer in Washington. It has an elevation of 5,298 feet (1,615 m) above sea level.

This man-made lake is located near Hemet, CA, is famous for the fields of golden poppies that bloom along its shore. During excavation for the three dams, bones and skeletons were found from extinct mastodons, mammoth, camel, sloth, dire wolf and long-horned bison.

1. Emerald Bay
The bay is on Lake Tahoe at the border of California and Nevada. Trees surround the water as far as the eyes can see. The area is the resting place for many boats, launches and barges used in the lake before the turn of the century, during the heyday of Emerald Bay Resort and used in the construction of Vikingsholm.

2. Lake Superior
Split Rock lighthouse towering over the cliffs of Lake Superior on the Minnesota bank. Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes, making it the largest lake in the United States.

3. Crater Lake
The lake is literally a lake in a volcanic crater that filled with water over time. Widely known for its rich blue color and extreme clarity, which averages 102 ft (31m) deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. The Old Man is a 30-foot mountain hemlock log with three feet exposed above water. It is the focal point of Crater Lake National Park, atop the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon.

4. Lake Powell
Probably the most unique lake in the United States is Lake Powell, a manmade reservoir along the Colorado River at the border of Utah and Arizona. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, and hiking. Prepared campgrounds can be found at each marina, but many visitors choose to rent a houseboat or bring their own camping equipment, find a secluded spot somewhere in the canyons, and make their own camp.

5. Lake McDonald
It is the largest of the many glacier lakes in Glacier National Park in Montana. The lake was formed by Ice Age glaciers carving out the basin millions of years ago. Built in 1913, the historic Lake McDonald lodge has a picturesque location on the eastern shore of the lake with 82 guest rooms split between the three-story main lodge, a row of cabins, Snyder Hall and the exquisite Cobb House.

6. Lake Champlain
This lake is situated along the New York-Vermont-Quebec border. It is fairly remote, making it one of the more serene spots. Lake Champlain is sometimes referred to as "The Sixth Great Lake". Coast Guard Station Burlington provides "Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement and Ice Rescue services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year".

7. Lake George
Also located in upstate New York, it's Lake Champlain's more popular neighbor. Lake George is famous for the Narrows, a stretch of the lake with lots of small, rocky islands. Notable landforms include Anthony's Nose, Deer's Leap, Peggy's Point, the Indian Kettles, and Roger's Rock.

8. Lake Michigan
The only metropolitan city-lake on this list is Lake Michigan. While the Chicago lakefront is the most famous stretch of Lake Michigan, the massive body of water borders four states and boasts miles of natural shores.

9. Maroon Lake
Near Aspen, Colorado, the lake is famous for its reflections of the Maroon Bells mountains. Though the most photographed place in Colorado, this small lake can only be reached by foot.

10. Lake Okeechobee
Is also known as Florida's Inland Sea is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida. It borders the Everglades of southern Florida. The lake has a unique topography and is known for its superior fishing and is home to more than 40 species of native fish. The lake is enclosed by a 40 feet (12 m) high Herbert Hoover Dike built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after a hurricane in 1928 breached the old dike, flooding surrounding communities and claiming at least 2,500 lives.

11. The Great Salt Lake
Located in Utah, it is the largest saltwater lake in the United States (and in the Western Hemisphere). It's known for the incredible pink and white salt reservoirs that form along its shores.

12. Tipsoo Lake
This is an alpine lake in the Northern Cascade Mountain Range, is situated at the base of Mount Rainer in Washington. It has an elevation of 5,298 feet (1,615 m) above sea level.

13. Diamond Valley Lake
This man-made lake is located near Hemet, CA, is famous for the fields of golden poppies that bloom along its shore. During excavation for the three dams, bones and skeletons were found from extinct mastodons, mammoth, camel, sloth, dire wolf and long-horned bison.

14. Bear Lake
This is a tranquil mountain lake in a spruce and fir forest at the base of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Cheley Colorado Camps was established on the shores of Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1921 by Frank Cheley.
