Hi Victorians,

We have a short slot available for a group read over September and early October 2022. So this is to invite nominations for a shorter work, about 350 odd pages which everyone would like to read over say a five to six week period after which our winter reading begins.

One nomination per person and per author as always. A poll will be set up as soon as we reach 6.

Find books read within the previous four years and so ineligible for nomination here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Michaela | 270 comments I thought The Hand of Ethelberta by Thomas Hardy was our next book?

If this was an error, I´ll nominate it, as I already got the book and am a big Hardy fan. :)

message 3: by Trev (new)

Trev | 623 comments I have started reading it (Chapters one and two.)

I read Chapter 1 last night and was about to read Chapter 2 tonight before I hit the sack. I thought the discussion was supposed to be starting today!?

Michaela | 270 comments I think we all thought the same, as the novel was announced at the bottom of the group page for starting today. :)

Hello, All. So sorry for the delay. Yes, Ethelberta is our group read for August. I’ll get it set up as soon as I can.

message 8: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 270 comments Thanks for the clarification Renee! :)

In this case I nominate The Half Sisters by Geraldine Jewsbury. It´s done well in the polls before, but never won.

Hi all, just another reminder that nominations are still open for September

message 12: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Sorgente | 113 comments I propose Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.

message 13: by Trev (new)

Trev | 623 comments I have chosen a novelist who I have never read and hardly heard of. She is Mary Cholmondeley. Her two most successful novels were ‘Red Pottage’ and ‘Diana Tempest.’ Diana Tempest is fifty pages shorter so I will nominate it for our September read.

For those who enjoy audiobooks:
Both Black Beauty and Diana Tempest have been covered by a LibriVox volunteer reader and both readers are excellent.

I’m still looking for an audio version for The Half Sisters.

Ooo. That might be interesting after The Vicar of Bullhampton!

message 18: by LiLi (new)

LiLi | 102 comments I read it several years ago. It's really excellent! But of course, it's George Eliot. What did you expect? ;)

message 19: by Frances (new)

Frances (francesab) | 411 comments I would like to nominate The Moorland Cottage by Elizabeth Gaskell.
