Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments Hi All.

I went on vacation the first weeks of July so all but two of the books were read in June.

Top Reads

The Maid - Nita Prose
A nicely done debut featuring a young woman working as a maid in a luxury hotel. The main character was different and quirky but relatable and the plot was very engaging. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Lauren Ambrose.

Platinum Blues - William Deverell
Amicable small town lawyer/mayor's life is upended when his daughter brings home a down on his luck, alcoholic, former rock star. Very enjoyable and tense legal suspense plot with a fun cast of characters.

Good Reads

Hell at the Breech - Tom Franklin
Historical fiction set in Alabama in the late 1890s and based on a real life incident. Well written with great period details but quite violent. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Larry Pine whose southern accent was perfect for the story.

Bad Business - Anthony Bruno
Unconventional FBI agents Gibbons and Tozzi are back for another fun adventure. The plot wasn't the most believable but the characters and humor were on point.

The Fifth Witness - Michael Connelly
Nifty legal thriller, featuring Mickey Haller, that incorporated the home mortgage foreclosure crisis into the plot. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Peter Giles who did a fine job.

A Dark and Twisted Tide - Sharon J. Bolton
Lacey Flint has returned to the uniformed police, joined the Marine Unit, is living on a houseboat on the Thames River, and is trying to keep a low profile but is drawn back into detective work after discovering a body while swimming. I always enjoy the characters in this series and the plot was fast paced if a bit over the top.

The Beach Club - Elin Hilderbrand
A fun summer drama set on Nantucket Island.

OK reads

The Golden Couple - Greer Hendricks
A decent tale of suspense featuring a Washington therapist with unusual methods. Listened to the audio version that was narrated by Karissa Vacker and Marin Ireland who were new to me performers.

Death in Ecstasy - Ngaio Marsh
Inspector Alleyn is called in to investigate a suspicious death during a religious ceremony at the House of the Sacred Flame. A fairly bland mystery with mostly annoying characters made this only an OK listen. Audio narration was performed by James Saxon whose excellent job helped me get through to the end.
