September 2022 PIFM (Pick It For Me)
Lance, of course I picked books on your shelf that I would never have heard of if it weren't for you, but they sound interesting and somehow make it to my list....
Martha, my pick for you is:
This was a 5-star book for me. I read it in anticipation of a trip to Savannah 6 years ago. It is nonfiction; however, it reads like a novel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

So many great choices Joy! Some are on my TBR already but I will add a few more from your list. Hopefully I selected a good variety.
My picks are

Honestly, before they were sent to me via review request, the only one of those three I had heard about was Spies on the Sideline

Thanks, Beth!
Jennifer, My selections for you are:
(Beth picked this one for me)
(I have read another of this author's books that I enjoyed)
(I have this one on my TBR so I look forward to seeing what you think of it)
(Sounds interesting)
(An unusual topic - I haven't seen many books set around blues music)Happy reading!

That Spies book does sound very interesting. Thinking my 12+4 next year should have some sports books on the list.
Joy, those are great choices! I saw that you got “Mercury” on your pick list as well. This should be a good reading month!
Jennifer wrote: "Joy, those are great choices! I saw that you got “Mercury” on your pick list as well. This should be a good reading month!"Yes, should be fun!
Jennifer wrote: "Whatever...... you're polluting my list again."Not sure if this means you’re happy I did that or mad at me for doing so. In either case, I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing…
I'm resigned to it. LOL
I just finished another book you imposed on my list:
which I quite liked, despite the fact that every time Gehrig's name was mentioned all I could see was him swinging for the fences, oblivious to what awaited him. But I guess that's true of us all.

If you want to read more on him…I recommend this, best baseball biography I have read and second in sports biographies only to this same author’s bio of Muhammad Ali: Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig
I have read that, and really liked it. (I've found my way to a few sports books before you came along, albeit very few and nowhere near as many as I now know about.... I've actually liked most of them, too. I loved
and
. I also really ended up liking that play I mentioned to you:
) And I am about to read
.
Hard to live where I do and not be somewhat aware of sports. There are the Gators, of course, but I was also at work (in the 9-1-1 center) the day our road units were asked by the FAA to see if any could spot Payne Stewart's plane, the pilot of which had stopped communicating with the Gainesville control tower minutes before.

Thank You! I had never heard of The Golf Omnibus so now it’s added to MY list - provided I can find a copy. Buried on my list is not the play but to David Manassis bio of Lombardi - but still working on his massive one on Jim Thorpe. The one August PIFM book I won’t finish until September
I'll keep you posted on "Golf." I love Wodehouse, and even if he uses the same gags over again occasionally, I still roll when I read him.
Funny, I hadn't thought of Payne Stewart in years. Hard to believe it's already been more than 20 years since that happened!
If you haven't got Golf by the time I finish, I'll send you mine.

Ok you are both “bad” influences and I will definitely make my next 12+4 sports books! ⚽️🏀🏈🥎🥎🎾🪀🏓🤼♀️🪂🏋🏽♀️🧘🏽⛹🏾♂️🏌🏻🏇🏽⛸🥊🥌🪃🏹🏏🥍🛼 Expect my request for recommendations in November 😘 and Happy Monday!
Sorry, Denise. I’ll make your picks soon. Had a busy Special Olympics weekend & now have Covid. Not sure if the 2 are related.
Denise, I choose these 2 books ... I read the first one & it was a 5 star read for me and the next has good reviews.
Hope you enjoy them.
Jackie wrote: "Martha, my pick for you is:

Thanks, Jackie. I saw the movie years ago & have wanted to read the book ever since.

[bookcover:The Thursday Mur..."Thanks Martha I look forward to them.
I finished Darkly Dreaming Dexter, some slight changes between the book and series, kind of unsure of the rest of them.
Denise, that series is charming. I could never get into his Isabel Dalhousie series though. Too much navel contemplation. Desley, I read that back before the series came out. It was ok, but I never had any interest in reading farther or watching the show...
Finished
3.5 starsEnjoyable like a summer blockbuster action film. Misfit band of scientists brought together to make extraordinary finds and then be chased by governments who want to control the information. Suspense belief and just enjoy the ride.
Completed book 1 of 3 for Sept. and enjoyed it very much!Mercury Pictures Presents by Anthony Marra - 4* - My Review
Oh glad you liked it! I’m reading my pick of that same book later this week… wonder who picked that…. Lol

Finished my 2nd of 3 for September:
Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits by Laila Lalami - 3* - My Review
Lalami is one of my favorite authors but this one is not as strong as The Moor's Account which I highly recommend.
Finished my 3rd of 3 for September - a new favorite! The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng - 5* - My Review
I got done earlier than usual. It was a great month - thanks, Beth!

So glad you liked your picks. Definitely bumping The Gift of Rain up to my priority TBR.

Finally finished one of my three selections.
was quite interesting. It included some things I never would have considered to be "cheating"My review: https://sportsbookguy.blogspot.com/20...

For anyone unfamiliar, this is a monthly challenge where you post a link to a shelf you created. It can be named "PIFM" or "Pick It For Me" etc, if you want one dedicated only to this challenge, or you can use an existing shelf you already have, as long as it has 100 or fewer books on it. The link must be to the specific shelf, or you will not be partnered.. Indicate how many books you would like to have picked for you from that shelf for the month in question. There is no lower limit as to how many books you can have on your shelf, but, of course, they should be books you are interested in reading during the next month and have ready access to.
On or about the 25th of each month, I will post who picks for whom. In order to accommodate an uneven number of participants, pairs will not be reciprocal -- in other words, it won't be Joanne picking for Jennifer and Jennifer picking for Joanne. It may be Joanne picks for Jennifer, Jennifer picks for Herman, and Herman picks for Suzanne, and someone else entirely picks for Joanne.
IF anyone has not been "picked for" by the 30th, I will pick for them if the designated picker can't be contacted by PM.
When you are assigned someone to pick for, note the number of books in parentheses after that person's name in the pick list, go to the link for their shelf, and pick that number of books for them. Post the books in a new message here. That person has the entire following month to read his/her picks. Someone will be picking for you the same way. We all like to see what people think about their picks, so we hope you will keep us posted in this thread!
Example: "In for five, please!
PIFM"
The HTML template for linking your shelf can be found here and if you have trouble, PM me and I will help you.
Your designated shelf must be set so that others can see it. To set up a PIFM shelf for those who would like to, go to the "MY BOOKS" link in the GOODREADS toolbar, scroll down below your shelves on the left until you see the "add shelf" button, and click that. Name it PIFM or Pick It For Me. Add books to it, and post the link to it in this challenge as described above. Again, if you need help, please don't hesitate to PM me!
If you are in for September, post your shelf and the number of picks you'd like to have below. See you on picking day!
September Pairs
Jennifer picks 3 for Lance
Joy picks 5 for Jennifer
Beth picks 3 for Joy
Denise picks 3 for Beth
Martha picks 2 for Denise
Jackie picks 1 for Martha
Desley picks 1 for Jackie
Lance picks 4 for Desley
