Autumn (autumnmemory80) Once you and your Book Pal have selected and read your book, post what you thought of the book on this thread. Partners are listed in this thread below. Can't wait to hear about your book choices!

You can go to the original thread Book Pals and click on your partner to see their books and friend them.

** Just a Tip - I like to give my partner at least three books to choose from with one being my top choice. That way they have some freedom as well.

★ ★ IF you have made an attempt to contact your partner with no response, please private message me letting me know so I can work on getting you a new partner for the month. Please give it at least 7 days before posting a comment as not all of our members log in every day. THANK YOU!

Freda Malone | 416 comments Yes! I love having Gopal for a book pal. I'm not just enjoying the discussions we have but I'm learning from him as well! He definitely makes me think! My only hope is that he is enjoying my simple thoughts as much as I am enjoying his substantially educated mind.

I really recommend the book I Am Pilgrim

Freda.. you have paid me the ultimate compliment. It's been a real pleasure being your book pal. The honors all mine. What's that crack about your thoughts being simple, my friend they are not simple, in fact your thoughts got me thinking about the story line which then kick started my "substantially educated mind" . So no putting yourself down pal. ;)

Amber Martingale I just finished The House of Silk last night.

*Major Spoiler Alert*

Watson met with someone he believes to have been professor Moriarty who tells him he was trying to direct Holmes' attention to the group known as The House of Silk because he thought that the way the patrons treated little boys was despicable...then he hands Watson the key to Holmes' jail cell from when he was framed for murder... .

*End Major Spoiler Alert*

This was really a surprising book for me, even given my love of Holmes... .

message 39: by Jenifer (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 28 comments Malia chose The Monster of Florence for me. It's a non-fiction account of a serial murderer in Florence during the 70's and 80's. The author is Douglas Preston (of the Pendergast series) who actually became somewhat embroiled in the case in 2000. I'm about a third of the way through and what I find most interesting is that I can see how Preston's time spent in Florence influenced some of his writing in the Pendergast series.

Black Flowers by Steve Mosby

My first book by this author and had read many good reviews for this book, so chose this for myself and my book pal Lisa for March.

Black flowers for the missing ones mean they're never coming back, in a chilling new tale from a master of modern crime.

This is not a story about a girl who disappears. This is the story of a little girl who comes back. As if from nowhere, she appears one day on a seaside promenade, with a black flower and a horrifying story about where she's been. But telling that story will start a chain reaction of dangerous lies and deadly illusions that will claim many more victims in the years to come. Neil Dawson has grown up wanting to be like his father—a writer. When his father commits suicide, he is devastated. But through his grief, Neil knows something isn't right. Looking through his father's papers, he finds a copy of an old novel, The Black Flower. Opening it will take Neil into an investigation full of danger, pain, and subterfuge. Hannah Price is also mourning her father. She followed his footsteps into the police force, and knows she has a big reputation to live up to. When she gets assigned to Neil's father's case, it will lead her on a journey into her own past and to the heart of a shattering secret.

The fact that you have a story being told within another story is ingenious and Mosby does it in an amazingly good way. You get pieces and pieces of information -some real, some fictional- and you have to put them all together to see the whole picture. Of course, you have a great help from the main characters, each one investigating in their own way the same past story at the same time.

The book also involves a serial killer, but not just any old serial killer, he's really clever and smart this one, he's twisted and sick, but he's evaded the eyes of the world for a very long time. The horror and chills that the book evokes from the scenes describing the killer, his motives, his thinking and his deadly methods were heart stopping. I had moments of thinking I wanted to dive into the book and shout at the victim or help them, or anything. Instead I watched him do his work. Not pleasant. You will never think of flowers the same way again after reading this book.

A complex but gripping story that holds your attention to the last page.

Why only a four star, mainly because so many characters to remember from the past and present.

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 28 comments I just finished The Monster of Florence and have to say it was very interesting. It's the non-fiction account of a serial killer that killed in and around Florence, Italy from the 60's to the 80's.

There was an afterword in the edition that I read linking the Monster of Florence story with the recent murder of Meredith Kercher and the subsequent trial of Amanda Knox.

I definitely recommend this book.

I liked that book as well. Terrifying story. Both for the serial killer and the crazy system of "justice" in Italy. I agree it was very good at explaining what Amanda Knox went through.

La Tonya Jordan | 55 comments I am more than half-way finish with Now You See Me less than 160 pages left. There is a serial killer who is duplicating the killings of Jack the Ripper from the 19th century. The killer has the police baffled. But, the relationship between detectives Flint and Joesbury keeps this book interesting. I am curious in finding out the killer.

La Tonya Jordan | 55 comments Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1) by S.J. Bolton Now You See Me. I just finished this book. There is a serial killer who is duplicating the killings of Jack the Ripper from the 19th century. The killer has the police baffled. But, the relationship between detectives Flint and Joesbury keeps this book interesting. The end is a shocker and worth reading to the end. The writing style was easy to follow. As a reader, I felt I was actually on the scene of the crimes and felt the frustration of the detectives in solving this case. The crimes do take place in the United Kingdom; therefore, you have the slang and vocabulary associated with that region of the country. Do not spend too much time on that or you will miss the action. Good Read.

Quote from Book:
Mark Joesbury was shaking his head at me, like I was something forced into his way but far beneath his notice.

It is a great book Freda.

We have quite a few Nelson De Mille, John Corley fans here.

I have the second on to read, a bit behind and the 7th is out soon.

A lot of these books are bought for movies.

La Tonya

Now You See Me, a great book by Sharon Bolton, a great writer, and so popular here
