A bit behind schedule but I like it so far I hope it keeps up the pace and doesn't drag out unnecessarily in the middle.

How are you guys doing do far?

Jen K | 1547 comments Also behind but plan to start tonight. Looking forward to it.

I'm not as far into it as I'd like but I've read enough to get the story going. I'm not exactly loving the storytelling... I think the writing is a little simplistic and I found myself bored within the first chapter, but I'm really really hoping I can get past it because I'm excited for this book!

Jen K | 1547 comments Chapters 1-5: Sounds like a horrific religion and society. Not so impressed. It is interesting that Forna managed to fit all the people of the world in one country. I'm interested to see what else is manifested with being a Gilded One. I like Britta and enjoying the ride so far.

@Edith, I definitely agree that the writing is overly simple. It is my struggle with some YA books. I'm hoping that the world building and story are good enough to get beyond it.

I wanted to join you reading this, and I started it, however I'm not going to read it past chapter 5. The first chapter didn't intrigue me, but I wanted to give it two more chapters because who knows maybe there's something that'll make me want to continue reading it, which didn't happen even after five chapters. There's just something that's not working for me. I hope you enjoy the story.

Jen K | 1547 comments Good try at least and even better calling it early enough to not regret the time too much!

The first few chapters aren't that great. The writing is young and overly simplistic. The switch in her father and a few others is honestly too extreme to be that realistic. I can see why it might not work and I might not finish at a different time and circumstance.

That said, I finished up to halfway last night. The overly easy and simplistic writing is sitting just right with my overworked brain right now. The concepts are interesting. I just don't love the dialogue and internal angst. Definitely not a 5 star in the making but some nice junk food for my brain right now. :)

Anyone else make it to the training grounds?

Didn’t get to the training grounds, but I think I’m with Mina on this one. It’s gonna be a DNF for me. I tried so hard but I can’t seem to get invested in it. My brain just keeps nitpicking at every little thing and it makes it hard to enjoy the story fully—which is a shame because I loved the concept of the book, I just keep wishing it was better executed 😭

Yeah, I was nitpicking at things too, I was more looking for things that I don't like than enjoying the book.

Lexus (lexcat1994) | 125 comments Hey guys! I haven't even picked this one up, life ha been hectic but I plan on starting it soon. Doesn't look like anyone really enjoying so I hope I can because these were gifts.

Jen K | 1547 comments I finished. It was fine. The idea is fun even if a bit predictable but you do have to get past the writing to enjoy. I might hold off on part 2 until Fright Night though.

I'm glad you enjoyed it enough to finish it. It doesn't matter if the idea is predictable, you have so many cliche books that are still fun and good despite them being a cliche, but yeah the tone killed it here, at least for me.

I too finished it and I don't think I'll be reading book the second it just wasn't for me :(
