Usual rules, up to two nominations, one SF and one fantasy per member, a novel or novella, published in English in 2022

Neom will not be out until November 8. It looks great though. Maybe nominate for December instead?

SF Upgrade
Fantasy The Monsters We Defy

I guess better for December or later. Also, let's discuss whether should we make December a nomination-free month, for members to catch up with their monthly reads.

I'm ok with that. Or maybe a novella and catch up

One novella + catch-up sounds good!

Rebecca | 411 comments Agreed!

Did most folks already read Daughter of the Moon Goddess? It came out early in the year and I've been meaning to pick it up. I might nominate it unless a lot of us have already read it.

No, I didn't read it.

message 10: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments I’ve been avoiding Moon Goddess because it is labeled YA. I tend to not enjoy YA much. Is it maybe one of those books that gets mislabeled as YA because it is by a woman and about a woman?

message 11: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments I like Antti’s idea to read a novella in December. It is low commitment but still gives us something to discuss.

message 12: by MH (new)

MH | 306 comments I am now regretting my life choices in having read most of the novellas already.

message 13: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments Haha, I’ve read ten so far, but there are still plenty to get to. How many have you gotten to? C. L. Polk and Rebecca Roanhorse both have novellas coming out in November.

Re YA--There are books written for younger readers and then there are coming-of-age stories. Even though often written for teens, I still really like them. Or teens doing adult things are ok, i.e., Doorway in the Sky. The problem is, when it is marked YA, you never know what you will get

I asked the library to get them both. Will they? Who knows!?!?

message 16: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments Should I nominate something different for SF? I'm probably going to get to it before November, but I'm wanting to read Goliath. I'll switch my SF nom to that.

ahh good point, perhaps - I always forget to check, but I am similarly turned off by YA.

My nominations are Under Fortunate Stars and The Path of Thorns

Most 'old' SFF pro-zines have at least one novella per issue, so just with Analog, Asimov's and Magazine of F&SF there will be like 18 per year... and then there are in a book form, so there are still a lot to read for this year

message 19: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I would like to read Neom too.

I have gone novella crazy this year! Well really anything under 300 pages, they make me feel more accomplished because I finish more books. There are still a few shorter works I'm hoping to read this year that fall into new releases too: Tread of Angels, Into the Riverlands, What Moves the Dead, The Jade Setter of Janloon, Ogres, Comfort Me With Apples.

Probably not the place for this, but I was inspired 😂

I've done 12 so far, with The House of Drought next in line. They're easy to read on a screen and burn through in a single evening, which is a good format for me.

message 22: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments I feel like we should make a thread to talk about and rate novellas we’ve read. 😄

Cordelia (anne21) | 111 comments SF: Eyes of the Void by Adrian Tchaikovsky

We read the first part last year.

Still thinking about fantasy
