Yikes! September pounced and I forgot, because after being sick I was doing a lot to catch up with the things left undone. And getting prepared to move again.

Moving again???!! Magdelanye, have you found a new home? How are you feeling? Strong and healthy?
September has crept up quickly. I cannot lie....I am glad to see September, with it's cooler temps and sunshine (fingers crossed).
I started this month reading a fun little book, The Diary of a Nobody. It's humorously chuckle-worthy throughout. A fun little read.
I'm about to start Tales from the Ant World. I wage war on ants every Summer......thought I should learn a bit about them. LOL....
I started listening to The Day She Died on my jog yesterday but it just did not keep my interest at all. It's poorly paced and I couldn't get interested in any aspect of the story. I sent it back to the library. I rarely give up on a book but this one was totally lacklustre.
Bedtime reading on my ereader is Pearl in a Cage, which I'm enjoying. I quite like Australian authors' writing.
Yes Petra, moving again, leaving here end of October. This has been evident for a while now, and if you are interested this sad story doesn't belong on this thread.
But it has affected my reading. In case I leave this part of the coast, I want to finish all my library books. Its just about doable as I have read most of the heavy lifters and have quite a good selection left. I did get ready player two and had just begun but when I went to renew they say they need it for a hold so I actually stopped reading it and switched it for one thats due this week.
I finished Love of the Salish Sea Islands: New Essays, Memoirs and Poetry by 40 Island Writers which was so delightful. Ellie I think you would love it. You too Petra, although Im not sure of your poetic tastes, I know how much you appreciate nature.
Was surprised that the next book of poetry was edited by the same woman as Salish Sea. I did pick those from a display and I realized they were both anthologies, but didn't realize that it ps my old friendMona Fertig I am loving this one too. Rocksalt: An Anthology of Contemporary BC Poetry
I've added the cover because its so wonderful although it doesn't quite come off in such a small reproduction.
Also started in the last few days
by Rebecca Solnit andSusan Sands s
Just what I need!
The Inside Story: the surprising pleasures of an aging bodies was a surprising pleasure, addressing the personal and the political aspect of embodiment, especially as we age.Now Im at the point in my reading of Notes from the Burning Age (about 30 pages left) where I slow down, not wanting to finish.
In fact, I was so taken with a couple of phrases that i took time out and wrote a poem beginning with them.
What is everybody else reading? This last week has been gorgeous here and its great to be able to do it outside.
Magdelanye, I'm sorry to hear that you are moving under sad circumstances. Renting is not an easy situation in these days. I hope you find a better fit with the next home. Will you be staying in the area?
Nice that your books are good ones. That's always a pleasure to hear.
I haven't been reading much lately; just at bedtime. I'm not much motivated lately. That means that the only book I've made any progress on from the list above is Pearl in a Cage.
I hope my reading mojo returns soon.
Gosh Petra I hope your reading mojo returns soon. i do notice that Pearl ( I hope thats not the name of the child or the poor mothers name)got a couple of rave reviews. Why not browse our little library. ooh that reminds me, i havent added any of the superlative reads Ive been engaged with over the last few months.
Went to sleep a little after nine with 10 pages left to finish Notes. Woke just now and looked at my phone in the dark to see the time and saw your message. Now Im outside to watch the full rising over the trees. Maybe thats affecting your mood too Petra. This is a big transition we're going through, with events matching up: the queen, indomitable, lady that she was actually dying yesterday and tomorrow the anniversary of 9:11.
Slowly accelerating reading as the days grow darker and working hours shorter ! Ice Road and Solace Lost
How was the holiday Ice?Just checked your 2 current reads. I read G Slovo so long ago, way before GR, that I cant remember which one, but this one sounds intersting so I ordered it from the libray. The other sounds too utterly grim
Hi--I'm so sorry you're having to move under difficult circumstances Magdelanye--blessings on you--
Petra, I also hope you get back into your reading groove soon. I've had those slumps from time to time--they're not fun but they always (so far anyway!) pass.
I just finished a biography of Gwendolyn Brooks, a poet I love a lot A Surprised Queenhood in the New Black Sun: The Life & Legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks--it was a bit uneven in terms of the writing but overall very interesting
by Michelle Zauner
I also read Crying in H Mart. It's about her relationship with her mother who died from cancer when Zauner was 25, and floundering in her life--the same age I was when my mom died, also from cancer; I was also floundering in my life. The parts about her mother's illness were gripping and brought back vivid (and painful) memories but I thought the end chapters were disappointing, maybe because they focused on recipes--cooking the Korean food of her mother and that side of her family is her way of honoring her mom and I have no interest in that at all so it's probably just me.
I'm about to start The Verifiers by Jane Pek which I'm looking forward to.
And still making progress (albeit slowly) on Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art and the Agnes Martin bio (which is due in a few days so I'd better focus on that!).
As always, reading too many books at the same time!
I'm going to check out the other threads to see what I'm missing.
gosh Ellie, re crying in h mart i hope you found some consolation in revisiting, if not the food.was there a recipe for kimchi? As for reading too many books at one time, there has to be a balance. i love to have a long book going like your 9th st women reading maybe half of a long chapter a day I love to start the day with a few poems and lately in addition to some fiction Ive got a magnificently illustrated account of a kayak adventure
for me balance is between fiction poetry spirituality memoir nature and of course something from the absurdly wide non fiction catagory which means i feel good with 6 books going to choose from throughout
Ellie, how was the verifiers?Once again have to thank you and especially Petra with your encouragent re audio books. I was able to follow the long and complicated - and quite thrilling Beasts of a Little Land even though it involved having to deal with the computer. Petra this might perk you out of your slump.
Hope everyone including our silent drop ins is able to enjoy the last rays of sweet summer.
I got bored with The Verifiers. I'll try again another time.Instead, I'm reading Amy Among the Serial Killers, which is fun (I've read other books by Jincy Willett & I enjoyed them as well). Also continuing with Ninth Street Women and now The Loft Generation: From the de Koonings to Twombly: Portraits and Sketches, 1942-2011 by Edith Schloss which is fascinating. Right now, this period in art, especially the women, is obsessing me.
I took out too many new books. I'm really hoping to read The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. The blurb intrigued me.
I also took out the book, Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency (Olivia Laing. Great name right?
well Ellie it looks like you have a nice array. I like it that you can just put something down if it bores you. I had planned to get on the laptop today to add my new current reads with links but it didnt happen. Instead It enjoyed reading outside and listening to a full day of
