Introduce yourself here :) I'm Katie from Books and Things on Youtube and I love Dickens.

message 2: by Penelope (new)

Penelope | 1 comments I’m Penny and love Dickens but would like to read more books and other writing by and about Dickens. Looking forward to what this group has to offer and how we can can contribute.

message 3: by Margaret (last edited Sep 12, 2022 09:12AM) (new)

Margaret (mlafaive) | 1 comments I'm Margaret and I've read and enjoyed several Dickens novels, including the year plus readalongs of Our Mutual Friend and Bleak House (loved them both!). I was already planning to read a Dickens for Victober and this readalong has made The Pickwick Papers the obvious choice. I'm really looking forward to joining in.

message 4: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I'm Luffy and I have a fascination for Victorian and Dickensian literature, but I love only a couple of Dickens's books, having tried to read about 4 of them.

Existentially speaking, I don't know why I am here. I just want to accompany the proper fans and encourage them. If I find myself becoming green with envy at the oohs and ahs then I might join in. Who knows, weirder things have happened.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm Jack, I picked up my first Dickens when my favourite professor said multiple times: you guys, you have to read Bleak House, (view spoiler). I read Bleak House and then four more back to back (I couldn't stop) but I've slowed down--so I'm looking forward to knocking at least a few more out. I'd like to read them all but we'll see!

message 6: by Gaby (new)

Gaby (gabyvdl) | 1 comments I'm Gaby from Germany. I've read six of Dicken's later novels during the last two years. My favourites are Our Mutual Friend, Bleak House and Dombey and Son. I've also read Little Dorrit, Great Expectations and Hard Times. I'm curious if there will be another favourite among the novels I haven't yet read.

message 7: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (marzo) | 1 comments I’m Andrea, from Italy. I have read some Dickens but would like to read more.

message 8: by Ieva (new)

Ieva | 1 comments I'm Ieva and I would like to read some more Dickens! Great Expectations is one of my favorite novels so I'm ready for a deep dive into more of his works.

message 9: by Trotalomas (last edited Sep 12, 2022 10:36AM) (new)

Trotalomas | 1 comments Hi, I'm Miguel, a spanish speaker and I love Dickens since I was a child.

The last years I've re-readed some Dickens books but it's really interesting to share with all you new reads and read some of my pending Dickens' works.

Sorry for my English if I have some mistakes.

message 10: by Claudia (new)

Claudia McCarron | 3 comments I'm Claudia from the U.S. Dickens is one of my favorite authors and I'm looking forward to getting to some of his books that I haven't tackled yet.

message 11: by Mary (new)

Mary (artistmaybe) | 2 comments I am Mary from Vancouver, BC Canada. I have started to read more of the classics and though this would be a great way to keep me on track. I already had a couple of Dickens books queued for October.

message 12: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1 comments I'm Louise from Canada. I haven't read much Dickens (yet), but would love to read his novels. I'm not how exactly I'll approach this readalong, since I would like to do the full thing but am also not an experienced Dickens reader. We'll see! I may use this Victober to start on something other than Pickwick Papers, but I'm not sure yet. Still, I'm excited about this readalong! :-)

message 13: by Susannah (new)

Susannah | 2 comments I’m Susannah from the UK. I have read a few Dickens before, mostly his later ones and would love to read some more so this is a great idea so I am going to give it a go.

message 14: by November (new)

November Ryan | 1 comments I'm Ryan :) I've read 5 Dickens novels, I think? I re-read Pickwick every year and I've also read Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Martin Chuzzlewit, and about half each of Nicholas Nickleby and Little Dorrit. I've also read some of his shorter works as well.

I decided I was going to do something similar back in 2017 and bought a bunch of the novels I hadn't owned yet and then ended up falling off the habit so I'm hoping following along with this will help me keep up, even if I don't read all of them. ^_^

message 15: by Bethany (new)

Bethany White | 1 comments I have read a bunch of Dickens and really liked them. I am on a mission to read all his remaining books. I am hoping that this will help me accomplish that goal.

message 16: by Janice (new)

Janice | 1 comments Hello 🙋‍♀️
I am Janice
I am so looking forward to this!
Thank you Katie for organizing it!

message 17: by Michael (last edited Sep 12, 2022 06:28PM) (new)

Michael Dennis | 2 comments Hello, my name is Mike and I live in the state of Iowa, USA. I've read 9 of the 15 novels thus far. I've been anxiously awaiting this announcement, Katie, since you casually mentioned it several months ago.

Oh, and by the way, of the nine I've read, I've never read Our Mutual Friend. Gasp!!

message 18: by Jesse (new)

Jesse | 1 comments I'm Jesse from California. I love the idea of this! It's been many years since I've read Dickens. I think now's the time to jump back in. Thanks so much for organizing this, Katie!

message 19: by Freya (new)

Freya Hutchins (fhutchins) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Freya and I live in North Wales.

I've read a few of Dicken's novels over the years. My favourites so far are Bleak House and Great Expectations. I absolutely hated Hard Times.

I'm looking forward to joining in with this readathon. Having a group read of his works and discussing them will be fun!

message 20: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 1 comments Hello I am Vanessa from Central New York. I am looking forward to this. I have read a couple of Dickens. Thank you Katie for organizing this.

message 21: by Emma (new)

Emma (edoppelma) | 1 comments Hey there I‘m Emma from Germany and I am really excited to join this readalong! I‘m quite Interested in the Victorian Era and accumulated a lot of literature from this time (including five Dickens novels) but somehow I never started reading them. I think as a German reading books in english, I‘m just a little afraid of the more complicated vocabulary and style of writing of the Victorian Era. Nevertheless, I see this Readalong as my opportunity to dive into the world of Victorian literature and have some nice discussions along the way :)

message 22: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 1 comments Hi, I am Theresa from Illinois, USA. I want to be honest and say this is a great idea and I really want to do this but I will probably fail right away. I have my Victober planned and don't want to change it so I am not sure if I can complete The Pickwick Papers in November. I have never read any of his earlier works and I know I can always start with Oliver Twist but that wouldn't be as fun.😊I am going to try though.

message 23: by Tim (new)

Tim (mick745) | 3 comments I live in UK. Been a big Dickens fan since childhood but slthough i have read all of them when in my teens and twenties i've not read many of the novels for a while. Looking forward to rediscovering some of the old gems.

message 24: by Bianca (new)

Bianca Klein Haneveld | 10 comments I live in Holland. I absolutely love Dickens: he is my favorite author. Actually, it is a tie - my husband Johan Klein Haneveld is an author too ;-). I have read most of Dickens' novels multiple times and all of them at least once. I am really looking forward to tackling them all in chronological order. That will be new to me. I am a bit nervous though: Dickens' books are not short and I have recently joined a bookclub (which means there are some other books I must read). I hope I can keep up!

message 25: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Hi, my name is Brittany and I am from Utah, USA. I have read a few of Dickens' novels. My favorite is a toss-up between A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol depending on my mood and the time of year. I have also read Great Expectations which I enjoyed. I don't know if I will read all of the books for the read-a-long, but will definitely jump in wherever I can. Very excited!

message 26: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (thelittlereaderlibrary) | 1 comments I’m Lindsay from the UK, thanks for organising this Katie. I’d love to read some Dickens as it’s been many years since I did!

message 27: by Jaspreet (new)

Jaspreet Kaur | Jasandbooks (jas_thebookthief) | 2 comments Hello, my name is Jaspreet and I'm from Delhi, India. I have read CD's some novels and I am a fan of his writings. Thank you for organising this read along because now I can read all of his works.

message 28: by Kaoru (new)

Kaoru | 2 comments Hello! I'm from Germany and somewhat of a fan of the Victorian era and the literature that it spawned. I just love these old doorstoppers with way too many pages, especially when they come with those beautiful copper/steel plate illustrations. Bliss!
I always meant to read all the Dickens novels - but so far I only ever went through six or so by his, in no particular order from his career. This group would be a good chance to finally fill a few gaps - and maybe revisit a few of them. Really loved "Bleak House" and "The Pickwick Papers". But if I'm going to revisit those I'd need to track down actual English copies, for I only got German translations of them on my shelves.

message 29: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Fletcher | 1 comments Hi! I’m Daniel, and I’m currently living in Connecticut, USA. Katie’s videos got me hooked on Dickens a few years back, and I’ve now read 7/14 of his novels! My favorites so far are Bleak House and Dombey and Son. I’m so excited to jump in and fill in the gaps with my Dickens reading, and maybe reread some favorites!

message 30: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Hi everyone. My favourite Dickens book is Martin Chuzzlewit.

To anyone who especially loves that book, please tell me your favourites. You might be saving me lots of time.

Thanks.

message 31: by Diane (new)

Diane Shearer | 4 comments I'm Diane. I've been reading Dickens since I was a teenager in the 70's and got hooked on Great Expectations. I've read and re-read them all multiple times (except Dombey and Son, once was enough), some I re-read yearly. My favorites are Our Mutual Friend and Bleak House.

message 32: by Diane (new)

Diane Shearer | 4 comments Emma wrote: "Hey there I‘m Emma from Germany and I am really excited to join this readalong! I‘m quite Interested in the Victorian Era and accumulated a lot of literature from this time (including five Dickens ..." Hi, Emma, may I suggest you try them on audio? It's a great way to get through a big book more quickly. You can listen while driving, cooking, whatever, and you can speed them up. And hearing the accents is great fun!

message 33: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (jodiah) | 1 comments Hi, I’m Jodi from California and have read 9 1/2 Dickens novels. Currently reading Our Mutual Friend for a Pickwick bookclub that is affiliated with The Dickens Project UC Santa Cruz. They hosted “Dickens to Go” on YouTube during 2020 pandemic which is how I discovered Katie!

message 34: by Laura (new)

Laura (mlalvarez) | 3 comments Hi! I'm Laura from Buenos Aires. I've only read A Tale of Two Cities, but I want to read more by Dickens.

The answer to the obvious question is yes, Sydney made me cry :)

message 35: by Yash (new)

Yash (literarychronicles) | 1 comments Hey, I'm Yash from Sri Lanka (@literary.chronicles on Instagram).
I have read a few books by Dickens and would love to read a few more. A Tale of Two Cities is my favourite from the ones I have read.
Thanks for organizing this readalong.

message 36: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Hi, I'm Rebecca. I've only ever successfully finished two Dickens novels: A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol. I've worked on reading others and seen many adaptations of his books, but his books tend to intimidate me on account of how long they are. I'm hoping that reading them alongside others will help me get through more of his body of work. He really is a fantastic writer.

message 37: by Tom (last edited Sep 22, 2022 08:14PM) (new)

Tom | 1 comments Hi, I’m Tom from Australia. I read Great Expectations when I was at school and then no Dickens for 38 years, until now, having just finished Bleak House. So good! Now I am ready for more

message 38: by Eve (new)

Eve LeBlanc (ehoffman11) | 2 comments Hi all! I’m Eve from Chicago (USA). I’ve only read Great Expectations, but it was a school assignment 15 years ago and I definitely half-assed it like I did most school readings, so I think this challenge will be my first real foray into Dickens! I’m not sure I’ll keep with the schedule but I’m excited to dabble at the very least.

message 39: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (bluestockingelizabeth) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Elizabeth from Minnesota, USA. I've read several Dickens novels but have always wanted to read all of his works. I'm excited to dive in - and I hope I'll be able to keep up with the challenge schedule. Best of luck to everyone!

Hi Miguel, please don't worry about making mistakes. Most native English speakers make mistakes all the time! LOL Welcome to the group.

message 41: by April (new)

April | 3 comments Hi, I'm April from Washington state, USA. I've read more than half of Dickens' major works. I may not read a couple of the books (I'm looking at you, Oliver Twist, and Dombey and Son) because I just read them in the last couple of years, but we'll see how I feel when I get to them in the schedule. I love Dickens, and I'm very excited about this read-along. Thanks for organizing it, Katie!

message 42: by Raluca (new)

Raluca Ferrari | 1 comments Hello there! I am Raluca and I look forward to starting reading all the novels together. Enjoy your reading everyone!

message 43: by Janice (new)

Janice C | 1 comments Hi, I am Janice and live in New Hampshire, US. I am looking forward to reading or re-reading along with this ambitious schedule. Though I have read a few of Dickens novels it was so long ago I have all but forgotten the stories. Excited to visit the world in these stories.

message 44: by Monarda (new)

Monarda | 2 comments Hi, I am Penney from Canada. I have read a few Dickens and look forward to reading his earlier works.

message 45: by Vera (new)

Vera Javyne | 1 comments Hi I'm Vera and I've only read a tale of two cities by Dickens, but my friend told me i haven't read Dickens at all!! My friend explained more about Dickens' other works, which led me to go and buy the first dickens book i saw (other than A tale of two cities)... coincidentally I picked up the pickwick papers. Then as i scrolled through youtube, there appeared *DRUMROLL.... Introducing the Pickwick papers for the Mega Dickens read along!! AAA the literary gods want this wretch to read this BOOK! HELP!

message 46: by Lisa Marie (new)

message 48: by Lindseymjk (new)

Lindseymjk | 1 comments Hi. I'm another Lindsey from the UK. Have to admit I'm not a massive fan of Dickens but I haven't read very much at all and I want to give it a proper go. This sort of group read is exactly what I need to encourage me to really get to know his work better. I'll be mainly listening on Audiobook.

message 49: by Bart (new)

Bart Vermeulen | 1 comments Hi, I'm Bart from The Netherlands. For a long time it has been my lifelong reading goal to read all of Dickens's main works, and so far I have read A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations! Excited to join this and started reading the Pickwick Papers yesterday :)

message 50: by Ty (new)

Ty Semersone | 1 comments Hi everyone, I’m Ty from NYC. Love Victorian literature, ‘Victober,’ and share with Katie an affinity for Trollope. A few months ago I read Hard Times to ease into Dickens, and just started the Pickwick Papers!
