I started and have made some progress, about 16% in (through chapter 7 in part 1). I'm finding it slow paced so far, but the characters are interesting and Due is dropping in some hints about more going on.

(view spoiler)[ I also was finding some aspects of David and Jessica's relationship starting to disturb me, and I appreciated the scene with Jessica's sister where she points out the issues and Jessica even acknowledges it. Rather than the common scenario where the female MC is just blithely in a problematic relationship and the reader is frustrated that she is so oblivious and no one else around her notices. I also have a content warning for the first chapter (view spoiler)[ death of a pet. It is not shown on the page, but the dog's illness is described. (hide spoiler)]

I definitely like it so far. Enjoyed the active wondering about the connection (view spoiler)[between Professor David Wohle and Dawit. Is David Dawit, or is it misdirection? Fun. (hide spoiler)]

Remembering when I read Children of the Night Carrion Comfort a few years ago. Also vampire-ish people in contemporary world. Had a blast of a beginning!

If this keeps up I can see myself reading the next book (EDIT: removing link bc there's a spoiler in the blurb), which has an even higher GR rating and a nod from American Book Awards.

I have a small anecdote about how this came to be on my TBR but will wait until I'm at a keyboard.

Through Part 4/Chapter 39

I am enjoying this, so much I have forgotten to come over here and give another report.

Stephen King (lots of books) +
Dan Simmons (Carrion Comfort, Children of Night).

That's good October reading!

I'm still reading along, through chapter 37 (at the start of Part 4).

(view spoiler)[ I'm finding it interesting, though kind of slow paced. There have been some good mysterious and creepy moments too (the ghost in the cave), and I look forward to seeing how those play out in the story.

But, I am having a hard time finding some empathy for David/Dawit. I went from "huh, maybe he's a bad guy," in the early chapters to "I think he might be The Bad Guy," when he killed Jessica's friend. I find him mostly very selfish and that is driving him to be the monster, doing terrible things. (I mean. can we talk about Teacake?) (hide spoiler)]
