Kaitlin Jundt (kkjundt) | 8 comments Yay! Can't wait!

Elizabeth Meadows (lizziefaye) | 424 comments I am starting this tomorrow and I hope that several of you will join in. There are 19 stories, so if we set a goal to read one a day, we will be done before the end of the month. If you have a comment about any individual story feel free to chat about it as you go, or you can wait until you finish the book and share your thoughts.
In case you can't find this particular book, I'm going to list the individual story names below. Perhaps you can find some or all of them in other collections such as the ones grouped by date. Debbi Faust I got a head start tonight. There are a lot of characters in this story.

Kami | 8 comments I finished the audiobook and am disappointed. These were mostly stories I had already read, if my memory serves me correctly. Librivox has her ss divided by years and i believe I have finished them all. Hopefully first time readers will enjoy this book.

Yes, I think that most of her short stories have been published in at least two collections. You read the dated versions and Among the Shadows is from the categorical versions.
You will also find some repetition when you read her short stories and novels because she would reuse ideas from short stories in her full length novels. I can't keep them all straight, but I still really enjoy them in any form.

I just read the first story this morning and I noticed that too Debbi. There were a lot of characters and intricate relationships. I had to read and reread a few parts just to get all of the relationships established in my head.

Mary Koenig | 3 comments I just finished The Deacon’s Painkiller and it is funny. There are 3 quotes that I particularly like. “When he put his foot down, something always squashed- and stayed squashed.”

“Amy had not lived with her pa for 20 years without discovering that when he began dragging peoples ancestors from their tomb and hurling them at your head, you may as well stop arguing.”

And finally ,”he was so godly as to be almost painful.”

Annie O'Brien | 18 comments I finished Davenport's Story and it is my favorite type of ghost story where the ghost helps or saves someone. I have middle grade books from the 80's and 90's with this kind of theme and have read them over and over. I also enjoyed The Martyrdom of Estella about a troubled romance. It reminded me of Marilla's past in that she said her pride and refusing to solve an argument ended her romance and that is why she never married.

Mary Koenig | 3 comments I hadn’t picked this up in a few days but I just read The House Party at Smoky Island and it is spooky!

message 12: by Kami (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kami | 8 comments I listen to this also on Openlibrary.org

Elizabeth Meadows (lizziefaye) | 424 comments Annie and Kami, thanks for mentioning Openlibrary.org. I hadn't heard of it, but will definitely check it out.

Elizabeth Meadows (lizziefaye) | 424 comments So far I have read the first 8 stories. I really enjoyed The Man on the Train. I loved that she could see the good in people despite what everyone was saying.
House Party and Girl at the Gate were both spooky. That is about my limit of spook factor.

Elizabeth Meadows (lizziefaye) | 424 comments I would love to know who all finished this collection and your thoughts. Did you have a favorite? Were there any that you didn't care for? I need to go back and see which ones stood out to me. Meanwhile, I would love to hear from you all.

My favorites were Min. She thought she was a failure but she changed the minister's life in ways she didn't know. I also like A Redeeming Sacrifice.
