What's the Name of That Book??? discussion
► UNSOLVED: One specific book
>
An adult western series with four or five POV characters. No romance? A man in the military that hated the war; his friend dies in the beginning. Possibly blood/water/river in title.

Elizabeth, around what year did you read this series?
Is it contemporary or historical western?
Military as in what time period or war?
How and why does the woman try to seek revenge?

I found it in a library, and I think I read it a year ago, but I may have read it longer than that. I think it was a historical western. As for the war period I think it was the Civil War, but I may be wrong about that.
The crossdressing woman I believe was seeking vengeance for someone she loved, but I can't remember if it was her tutor, father, brother, or an actual lover. I do remember that she was a good shot.
The solder hated the war, I remember, and one of his friends died. He was tried of fighting, or something similar to that. There were other characters, but I never finished it, so I never found out more about them. I think there were four, or five POV characters. I vaguely remember the cover; it was brown and had a western desert. The book was old too. Maybe the 80s.

No, it's not on there, but I appreciate you taking the time. :)
Do you remember if the general tone of the book was serious, humorous, suspenseful? There is the Flashman series, at least two of which are set in mid-1800s America: Flashman and the Redskins and Flashman And The Angel Of The Lord.

Again thank you for the answers. It was (I think) serious.
Elissa wrote: "Could the book you're looking for be... Girl in Blue?"Sorry, but it's not. It wasn't from Scholastic and it wasn't an YA or teen fiction. Thank you for the suggestion though.
Did the woman travel far to track down the killer, or stay at home?
Did she fight in a war?
Was there romance in the story?
About how many books are in the series? Are they about a single character, generations of a family, etc.?

I'm not sure about the female character fighting in a war because I never finished the book. I'm pretty sure she did travel though. I don't think there was any romance. And, lastly, no, it was not about a single character. There were several in fact - around four or five characters - and they all POVs.
I might have to go the library and see if I can find it. It's really bothering me that I never read it all the way through.
Maybe, the Daniel Duggins series?https://www.goodreads.com/series/4299...
There is also a 4th book in the series. Death Along the Cimarron
Did the woman crossdress to hide her identity or b/c she just like to, or some other reason?
No, that's not it either. It wasn't just the cross dressing woman. There were at least four other POV characters in one book.
Still searching.I remember there was a battle in the beginning, and one of the main characters' best friends is shot and killed. There's some description about the blood mixing with the water. The POV character (the military man) is wounded and runs through some woods. I think there was a scene with an Indian in it later on in the book.
It was an adult series with some strong language I believe. The title may have had something about water in it.
Still searching. I believe the title may have had the word 'blood' or something similar. Please someone help me find this.
The bump period is 30 days.
Was the author someone completely obscure? It is strange that this is not on GR (and by the way how do you know that, if you don't know the title or author?) which suggests a very obscure author.
When you say the title may have had "blood" and "water" in it, would those two words be in the titles of two separate books? Or in the overall series title?

Sorry about that. I completely forgot.
He may have been. I remember the only reason I picked the book up was because the last name looked similar to one of my family's last names, other wise I wouldn't have bothered.
I think the words 'blood' and 'water' or some other word like them was in the book title. Maybe river?
I looked in every place on Goodreads and off for the book. I even checked an online local library database for it but it wasn't there.
How about these lists? Did the author or series seem popular at the time or obscure?

Are the multiple perspectives Rashomon-like, describing the same events but from different conflicting views? Are some of the characters' narratives unreliable?
I'd imagine obscure at this point. I've been looking for a long time now, and haven't been getting any leads. I will look on those lists though. Thank you.

No, I'm afraid those are not the books I'm looking for.
I'm not sure how many books were in the series, I just know it was one. The book started off with a man watching his friend be shot and killed. The book describes the blood mixing with the river's water. He, after witnessing this, runs away from the combat. I think he meets an Indian character in the woods later on.
Added more details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.
Can you tell us more about the 4-5 characters - are they related, travelling together, how do they meet, their jobs/skills/interests, etc.?

Thank you.
One of the characters was a male in the army. He hated war and he hated fighting. I think it's likely he was drafted in or something similar. It was his POV that opened the book. He and one of his friends were fighting people next to a river before his friend is shot and killed. The friend's body fell into the river, his blood mixing with the water.
The POV character ran into the woods and, I think, he eventually ran into an Indian.
The second POV was a cross-dressing woman who was good with a gun and was on a quest for vengeance for a loved one. I can't remember who she was trying to avenge.
I had never finished the book because it belonged to the library and I had to return it. I moved shortly after returning it. I'm not sure about the rest of the characters, but I'm pretty sure there were, at least, four or five POVs.
The back of the book had their names and information about them. I think the rest might have been men? I'm not sure. One of the characters might have been an Indian.

I think the cover was brown in color. The back had the characters names and a brief bio for all of them. It is not on Goodreads as far as I can tell.
