Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments I see more and more books classified as Folk Horror. I read one recently and absolutely loved it. I was wondering if anyone has any that they've read and would recommend.

Thanks!

If you're not allergic to short stories, there are a few anthologies out there, and "The Great God Pan" by Arthur Machen and "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood (among other stories by each) are early instances of folk horror.

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments Thank you, Randy! I am certainly not allergic to short stories. I'll be sure to check out your recommendations! 😊

The Ritual by Adam Nevill by Adam Nevill
The Reddening by Adam Nevill by Adam Nevill
Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon by Thomas Tryon
Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand by Elizabeth Hand
The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley by Andrew Michael Hurley
Devil's Day by Andrew Michael Hurley by Andrew Michael Hurley
Candlenight by Phil Rickman by Phil Rickman
Curfew by Phil Rickman by Phil Rickman

These authors frequently write folk-ish books beyond what I've listed here, especially Rickman.

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments Sweet! Thanks for all the recommendations, Alan!

I'll second Nevill's The Ritual, the Tryon and Rickman's Curfew, and did a head slap that I hadn't thought of them when posting earlier.

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments Great! Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I look forward to reading several, if not all of them. I love this group for helping me discover books I never would have known existed otherwise. 🖤

I'll third the Tryon, it's one of my all time favorites.

Two Envelopes And A Phone Some ideas:

The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley , For Fear of Little Men by John Blackburn , Dragon Under The Hill by Gordon Honeycombe , Fellstones by Ramsey Campbell , The Mammoth Book of Folk Horror by Stephen Jones

Two Envelopes And A Phone Some weird stuff:

The Sending by Geoffrey Household , or his other book Dance of the Dwarfs by Geoffrey Household

I remember this one, Shaman Woods by J.M. Morgan , but probably way off the grid, hard to find.

I suppose there's this Native Rites by David Hewson

Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon is pretty much the must-read in Folk Horror, as others have already indicated.

OK, I couldn't place them at first, but we actually have 2 recent posts about this, just in different sections so I'm providing the link, even though I think there's a lot of overlap:

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments Thank you Alan! I searched for another thread for Folk Horror but completely missed that one before I started this one. I appreciate the link! 😁

Marie | 4074 comments You could also try these two books:

Klondike Slaughter & Bone Snow by David Haynes (both books by the same author)

I agree with Adam Nevill being mentioned. Another book by him is this one:

Cunning Folk

Another book would be this one:

Helltown by Jeremy Bates

Jeremy Bates writes a lot of books that deal with folk horror, but I read Helltown and gave it five stars. :)

James Seger (jseger9000) | 34 comments The Ceremonies by T.E.D. Klein is a classic. Unfortunately, the ebook is only available in the UK, not the US.

Bryan Singleton | 4 comments I'd recommend "The Old Gods Waken" by Manly Wade Wellman. It's the first book in the series John the Balladeer.
