Anyone think they know how the Ghost of Jamie will be explained in future story lines?

I think he appears as a ghost because he dies before Claire. He has to wait for her in the great beyond but can haunt her at any time post his death (in 1945, for example). I just wonder if Claire will remember that experience with Frank at any point.
If Jamie Dies before Claire in his time does Claire go back to her own time or wait to die in Jamies time?If she waits to die does she get reborn and start from the begining?
If she goes back after Jamie dies is she haunted by his ghost?
Time travel???? Hard for me to grasp!

If Claire is able to make the trip, she'll go back to Rog & Bree. She won't be re-born; her life moves in a linear fashion, she bounces in and and out of time periods but her own personal time only moves forward. She will be born in modern times and then leave. Ghosts are not bound by time; they can haunt anywhere!

thanks~
By the way travel through the stones is described it seems to get harder each time (not that it is easy the first time but on subsequent trips it seems to be even more difficult). At one point, I think before Claire went back to Jamie the second time she told Bree that she would not be coming back and I seem to remember this was because she thought it might kill her. Roger at the beginning of An Echo in the Bone talks about how it felt traveling through. I doubt Claire would come back even if Jamie died first.
Does anyone remember when Jamie told Claire that he knew she would go back to her own time b/c he saw her sitting by a yellow light? He said it "wasna" candle light. I think that was in ABOSAA??? Maybe that was what his ghost saw from Outlander???
When I read ABOSAA, I assumed it was the time in Outlander that he was referring to....and was relieved to finally hear about it because I had always wondered about that incident.

I think Jaime will die first and she'll go back to Bree. Or maybe he was seeing her before she returned in Voyager; you never know with these time traveler types.
We can't really comprehend because time is apparently not linear in these stories. Confusing, I know!
I love these books, but I am not as well versed as you guys, so I have a question. What are you referring to when you talk about the "Ghost of Jamie"?

I want them to die together like the people in the cave in DFIA holding each other.

They can't all be like The Notebook (film, not book).
OK, now I have chills about the "ghost" being Jamie. My reaction is so funny - I know they are just characters in a book, but they seem so alive to me!! Now I will go back and read that part of Outlander from a whole different perspective!
I always thought that was Jamie and wondered why it never occurred to Claire. Remember, the ghost had a stag pin?Maybe a ghost can only "haunt" the relative area where they died...so Ghost Jamie (who has the memories of his entire life with Claire) dies in Scotland and knows Claire will be in Scotland in 1945, right before she goes through the stones for the first time. He just wants a glimpse of her as she was, just before they first met. Awwwwwe. :)

That gives me the chills
hi guys, am new here, and this is the perfect group!!, Just read 5 of the books, am reading the 6th, and, ....sigh, I do hate the idea of Jamie dying first, without claire. Them being apart..They need to stay together, the last book should end with them being together, don't you think?

So happy to have found you all! I read on DG's website that we find out about the ghost in book 5...but I just finished book 5 and there was nothing! In reading above some of you have mentioned DG said it's in the last book? Was I reading outdated info on her site? Where does she say it's in the last book? I'm dying to know if it's Jamie...it's got to be, right!? :)
The quote you read is definitely outdated!! (I guess at that time she thought she'd only write 5) It is Jaime, though, and hopefully we won't wait a billion years to find out how and why.
Hey everyone, new to the group, but LOVE the books...I've pretty much been obsessed with them since my friend introduced me to them about 2 months ago and have since devoured every single one...i just thought of a quote that makes me believe that (as we all know) the ghost is Jamie's, but that it is his ghost watching her, waiting for her to go back through the stones to start their story all over again (as another poster had previously mentioned)...this to me would be his "heaven", to be with Claire forever. anyways, i came across this quote which fits quite nicely:
------
"I will find you," he whispered in my ear. "I promise. If I must endure two hundred years of purgatory, two hundred years without you---then that is my punishment, which I have earned for my crimes. For I have lied, and killed, and stolen; betrayed and broken trust. But there is one thing that shall lie in the balance. When I shall stand before God, I shall have one thing to say, to weigh against the rest."
His voice dropped, nearly to a whisper, and his arms tightened around me.
"Lord, ye gave me a rare woman, and God! I loved her well."
Dragonfly in Amber Chapter 46: Timor Mortis Conturbat Me - Page 889
Amby, I just love that too. I'd faint if I husband ever talked like that so sweet. I'd think he's been taken over by aliens.
ChristinaRae wrote: "The quote you read is definitely outdated!! Where has DG said that we find out in the last book about the ghost? It was on her FAQ page that she said it was in book 5? Is there another source I should be reading? Thanks for your help! ;)
I have read the Outlandish Companion, her website, and bits and pieces on Compuserve; (Obsessed? Me? What?)I can't remember where I saw it but she did say in more than one place that we would find out about Jaime's ghost in the end. And even if she writes more books than originally planned I don't see why she would change that plot element; it's already there in Outlander!BTW, if you're really crazy about her work, you could listen to the little podcasts she has on her website in the Writer's Corner. She's actually a pretty entertaining speaker. DG also posts articles on a Scottish Networking website called PANALBA.

She was so witty and entertaining! Thanks for shedding light on the ghost! I haven't started Echo yet...I just started ABOSAA....so, Echo is not the final book? Would you recommend Outlandish Companion?
Echo is NOT the final book. I personally speculate that there will be 2 more.Outlandish Companion is a fun read; it has lots of extra historical tidbits and inspirations, anecdotes, etc., but it's older and only covers through DOA (I think) so it is somewhat limited. I rented a copy from my library.

I loved that quote! Gives me goosebumps ;)
Always wondered about when frank saw that man looking in claires window. Remember he said he looked so sad. I freeking bet... If they don't die together i might kill me :) I'm so addicted... off to read Fiery cross :)
Kelly, if I remember right, the ghost was frowning, looking at her through the window. So frowning sad maybe?
Yes he definatly was, hence the thread I started, on how do you think the series ends? I have a theory, most people think me crazy... lol.
OK, this is just a thought but, if the "ghost" is Jamie waiting for Claire after his death, how the heck does he remember something that won't occur until after he has died?Jamie is able to see Brianna, Roger and the kids living in the future in his dreams, just as he saw Claire in what he thinks is electric light.
Is there not a chance that while Jamie can't travel through time physically, he may be able to travel through time while he sleeps? Like some sort of astral projection kind of thing where his spirit is free to roam time and space?
The Frasers do all seem to have some psychic powers...
I think that maybe Jaime will be able to travel through time in the last book. The only reason he can not "hear" the stones is because he is tone deaf and can't hear certain pitches of sound (remember the head injury in Outlander). I have a feeling that J&C will travel forward in the last book and spend their last days with Breanna and her family. Just a thought....
Lori wrote: "OK, this is just a thought but, if the "ghost" is Jamie waiting for Claire after his death, how the heck does he remember something that won't occur until after he has died?"Well, even though chronologically Claire goes through the stones after Jamie died, she was with him in his time, so of course he would remember Claire, she was his wife. :) He knows about her coming back from the 1940's, he knows when and where, so it could be his ghost waiting for a glimpse of her.
And it also could be some sort of astral projection. When he saw Claire in the electric light, where was that? If he projected after she went back through the stones, it would explain the sad face.
