A darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping debut novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion if only he can get one more member of the wealthy Harrison family to sell their soul.

Peyote Trip has a pretty good gig in the deals department on the fifth floor of Hell. Sure, none of the pens work, the coffee machine has been out of order for a century, and the only drink on offer is Jägermeister, but Pey has a plan—and all he needs is one last member of the Harrison family to sell their soul.

When the Harrisons retreat to the family lake house for the summer, with their daughter Mickey’s precocious new friend, Ruth, in tow, the opportunity Pey has waited a millennium for might finally be in his grasp. And with the help of his charismatic coworker Calamity, he sets a plan in motion.

But things aren’t always as they seem, on Earth or in Hell. And as old secrets and new dangers scrape away at the Harrisons’ shiny surface, revealing the darkness beneath, everyone must face the consequences of their choices.

That was great , Long but funny.

I finished today and am still processing my feelings (will share a full reflection soon) but my gosh it was good. I did not expect to feel as pulled to Peyote as I did throughout, and truly I had no idea a book partially based in Hell could be so heartwarming and deeply moving at times.

I second what the person above said. I haven’t finished the book yet, but I am quite drawn to Mr Tripp here, and the book is entertaining. There’s little bits of humor, and the Wildcard aspect with Calamity Gannon plus her backstory with the file… I don’t know, something about it is pulling me in to know more, and I like where it’s currently going, especially the flip perspectives with the Harrison family on Earth.

I'm really liking this one so far

but Ruth is a real ringer here. Is she somehow tied to the girl who was killed? she seems weirdly focused on this family and worming her way in. She keeps saying the Mr. & Mrs. and yet she's doing things that will make them uncomfortable later. Interesting that she's knocking down the brother's walls

I hate that the mom is cheating. I wonder why. . .they seemed like they had a good marriage. what happened?

Part 2

I'm still loving it!

(view spoiler)[ I was starting to wonder if Lily did it! If Silas was sleeping with Sarah, I was starting to wonder if Lily had pushed her in
so far, I'm not sure why Silas would - but I guess now we can understand the cracks in the "perfect" marriage

I'm still not sure what to make of Cal. her history is frightening but what did the general want her to do in hell?? Hmmm. . .

and Pey, I assume we know he's the brother - I wonder if he will succeed and what it will mean when he does

Ruth, I don't like her and can't help but think she's somehow tied to Sarah. I think she pushed her way to go on this vacation and is not just causing havok. What is her goal? and I wonder who Pey will make the last deal with . . . (hide spoiler)]

I really enjoyed this one, I was really only expecting something funny and was quite surprised to get hit with the feelings. I also like how the author tied the people in Hell back into the people on earth, that was also unexpected but good unexpected.

I would definitely read more from this author.

(view spoiler)[ I thought Ruth was somehow tied to Ruth, never imaged it was from the brother. What a horrible man he'd turned out to be!
And I thought Sarah's death would have been less vague - it so sad how it all played out, because they were kids! But yeah, Silas was a bit scary

Interesting that it wasn't a brother but maybe Rose's dad that was in hell.

I'd figured the boys were Cal's army but I love that he went for her and hopes to give her a better childhood so she can avoid hell.

How the heck is Cal’s dad still alive when she finally found him after being in hell for “centuries” ?

I think (if I'm remembering correctly) that (view spoiler)[ she isn't exactly in a linear timeline in Hell. I don't think you can be in Hell and working and going out getting deals while you are alive (since you can't see/bump in to yourself!). so it's a weird timeline (hide spoiler)]
