I enjoyed the grizzled engineer character, but thought it was a little convenient that he just happened to have exactly what they needed, not once but twice. Still, he was an interesting character that I would have enjoyed knowing through the whole series.

H. G. Wells would have thoroughly enjoyed this read. If not meant by Oppel, I think the whole series is a fine homage to The War of the Worlds told for middle grade audiences and with young persons at the helm. Seamlessly well-drawn story lines follow three alien-hybrid friends, each one with their own backstory, skills, and lens on the world that filters what is happening and how to react. They are pushed to the maximum and step up to every challenge no matter what might hold them back and regardless of the inconsistent support by adults and their inner battles with loyalty and friendship. In this final volume of the trilogy, the friends' relationship to the dual factions of the aliens and their technology provides a conclusion with a lot of relatable substance. The overarching storyline of the series also carries contrasting attitudes about the treatment of the main characters by Canadian and US authorities. This is the fourth book I have read by Oppel; now enjoying his newest book Ghostlight. Hope to read more of his backlist and future publications.
