Anita Pomerantz | 9581 comments I don't read a lot of genre fiction, but I have liked horror in the past, and this book was actually scary. This one has been on my TBR forever, and I was happy to have an excuse to finally read it. It had everything I wanted for this month - - scary, suspenseful, psychologically interesting, decent characters.

Oddly though it was written in 2014, it actually evoked some of the same issues that occurred during our recent pandemic, so it seemed prescient.

The pacing was outstanding. I feel I could have read the whole book in one fell swoop.

Imagine if there was something out in the world that if you saw it, horrible things would happen - - forcing you to wear a blindfold to prevent a random sighting. That's the premise, and it's a great hook. A reader can definitely relate to all the challenges that might arise . . .and some of these actually did occur with just masking during the covid crisis.

I did have one small quibble. Even though people have cell phones, there's quite a few references to getting water from wells. Um, do people ever actually do that? But putting that to the side. This was fast-paced with decent writing and lo and behold, the characters were actually interesting.
