Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was might fit the bill. It was a S&L pick a couple of years ago.
Ken Liu's The Grace of Kings is coming out April 7.Besides Journey to the West you might also enjoy Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Vol. 1. It's more historical epic than fantasy though

I got my signed ARC in the mail today (won it by emailing him when he said he was handing out ARCs!)..Just need to finish Gardens of the Moon so I can start.
I'm about halfway through my ARC. Enjoying it a lot. I hope they make an audiobook of it, I think it lends itself well to an audiobook.

I read several hundred pages of RoTK, but stalled under the weight of so many characters and events. I've read that the various translations vary in readability, and it's certainly a fascinating story, but I might need something more reader friendly. I appreciate the suggestion, though.
The tricky part will be setting Erikson's epic aside to read something else. I found myself a citizen of the Malazan Empire for a while, and his world building can really absorb you.

But I know what you mean...I just finished GotM an hour ago, and am ready to jump into Deadhouse Gates, but my ARC of Grace of Kings is also print only!

There are three more in the series."Thanks, David! The first one is going right to my Kindle. I recall a college buddy of mine read stories about a doctor/kung fu artist in China. I don't recall the author, but Bramah's works sounds like similar fun.
The Tales of the Otori series is really good. "Across the Nightingale Floor" is the first one I believe.
