The Magicians- What if young adults from our real world find a way into the worlds that inspired C.S. Lewis's Narnia and maybe other popular fantasy novels? Quentin is a seriously obnoxious, whiny hero, on par with Harry Potter, but this is still a pretty good book.
Susy wrote: "I’ll be reading The Magicians this month too!"I think I will check out the The Magicians in the coming weeks-- thanks to you both for the idea!
Wolfsong by T.J. Klune — on the surface a werewolf story. It‘s very character driven though and is also a m-m romance. The take on werewolves is unusual. There is some violence, lots of cursing and some graphic sex, but mostly this lives through the internal monologue of the MC and his development over the years. Great stuff, it made me very happy. ★★★★★
The Sandman, Vol. 2: The Doll's House by Neil Gaiman
The Hidden Witch by Molly Knox Ostertag
Unicorn Famous by Dana Simpson
The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller
Quite a dark fantasy with some elements of mystery and sci-fi. It was a well-written, good read that tied up in the end.
In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
Have read several others in this pretty interesting YA fantasy series. Plan to read them all eventually and I can recommend.
I guess these also fit best here:
The Bad Guys in The One?! by Aaron Blabey
The Bad Guys in Cut to the Chase by Aaron Blabey
The Bad Guys in They're Bee-hind You! by Aaron Blabey

They feel more fantasy than sci fi to me, but yeah, kids' books can be extra hard to classify. I consider them "funny" before any other genre.
Web of Lies - technically listed as urban fantasy - Gin is a former assassin who can manipulate elements (stone and ice with her magic) - second book in series - def. going to continue listening
The House of Rust, by Khadija Abdalla Bajaber. A Kenyan girl goes on a journey to find her missing fisherman father, with the help of a talking cat.

The Midwinter Witch (The Witch Boy #3) by Molly Knox Ostertag
Saga, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
Unicorn Selfies (Phoebe and Her Unicorn #15) by Dana Simpson
I've been re-reading David Eddings. I've finished the Blegariad, Mallorean, Elenium & Tamuli series & have just finished Polgara the Sorceress. These are high fantasy, mostly written in the 1980s, that I enjoyed very much a few decades ago. I've found them more irritating this time, so perhaps they're better for younger readers. I still enjoyed them enough to read all the way through & will finish off with Belgarath the Sorcerer.I couldn't read the later Dreamers series the first time around so I'm not attempting them again.
I'll come back with a list so you can add to your Genre War tally.

"Fantasy is distinguished from the genres of science fiction and horror by the respective absence of scientific or macabre themes, although these genres overlap. In popular culture, the fantasy genre predominantly features settings that emulate Earth, but with a sense of otherness.[1] In its broadest sense, however, fantasy consists of works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians from ancient myths and legends to many recent and popular works."(wikipedia)
