Carol (carolfromnc) | 4057 comments This is the thread for our November group read of Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender, a juvenile novel set in Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Hurricane Child was the recipient of the Stonewall Book Award and the Lambda Literary Award, both in 2019 and in the Children's and Young Adult category.

What a gorgeous cover: Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender

Kacen Callender's fantasy novel, Queen of the Conquered, won the 2020 World Fantasy Award and King and the Dragonflies won the 2020 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. Here is a video of Callender accepting the Stonewall Book Award; and the transcript is displayed under the video tab, for anyone who prefers to read than watch.

Who plans to participate?

Misty | 540 comments I am planning on participating with this book. I got it on Audible. I'm just trying to finish up the book I am currently reading, so I will be starting it Thursday probably. I'm looking forward to this one.

Lindsey | 303 comments I'll be joining also! I found a super affordable copy on ThriftBooks. Like Misty, I'm also finishing up another book first, but planning to get started this weekend.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 4057 comments My hold came in today - so am hopeful I can read this on Sunday after I finish the book I'm reading for an IRL book club that meets that afternoon.

Laura (aliensandunicorns) | 2 comments I also just got mine so I’ll read it as well!

Lindsey | 303 comments I’m about 3/4 through and have really enjoyed this one so far! I had zero expectations going into it (I hadn’t even read the synopsis), and have been pleasantly surprised. I especially love the narrator for the audio version.

Misty | 540 comments I had some things happen and fell into a reading slump for a few weeks. I finished the book yesterday though. I have to admit that I really didn't care much for it. It was very "meh." I'm guessing I wasn't the only one since there wasn't a whole lot of discussion on the book!

Jamie Zaccaria Sorry I dropped the ball on this everyone, I got crazy busy life. I hope you all liked it!

Hey - life happens! Honestly, it did not float my boat, but I am glad that I read it.

Glad you nominated this one! I enjoyed it. Plus, it's totally outside of what I'd normally pick up to read on my own, so I doubt I would have read it otherwise. It was a sweet story and a nice easy read.
