The next time an English composer is in need of a good libretto, he should take a careful look at A Half of Two Lives. If the book’s not the basis for the Great English Opera, there’s no question that Alison Waley is certainly a perfect candidate for the Great English Operatic Heroine with her motto, “Keep Hysterically Passionate and Carry On.” -- Neglected Books Page
Had a hot thing with Arthur Waley.
I say that because A Half of Two Lives features some of the most passionate love scenes, some of the most operatically intense raptures, some of the most uncontrolled and unashamed outbursts of desire to be found in any pages of English prose. Although she had to wait until the age of 82 to publish her love story, Alison Grant Robinson Waley managed to channel all the energy and focus of her inner teenager into its telling. --see link supra

She's got two things. A Half Of Two Lives which is the one you'll want and is ENTIRELY UNREAD (or thereabouts!) and worth an entire THREE PENNIES on amazon today. The second thing I don't know nothing about (Waley listed as 'editor' on the amazon page) is Dear Monkey.

I doubt your world will entire turn upside down if you read her, but maybe, you know, something. But Alison didn't expire 'til she'd walked One Hundred Years upon this planet.

Seana | 3 comments I grabbed the three center, Nathan, but there are still plenty of other cheap copies available. Thanks for the rec. It sounds right up my alley.

I think I'm another two years further behind in my reading because of these good folks of the BBC!
