A book about a vacation.

In 2022 we had a holiday, now we have a vacation! I don't read many books about vacations!! All I can think of is People We Meet on Vacation

Listopia list is Here: A Book about a Vacation

message 2: by Meagan (new)

Meagan (mmbell) | 9 comments I have a few upcoming releases that I'm considering for this prompt:
The Villa by Rachel Hawkins
You Shouldn't Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose
and
One Night on the Island by Josie Silver which I didn't get to this year!

message 3: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1793 comments Does Emily Henry only write about people on vacation? I liked Book Lovers so will probably read one of her others for this.

LOL maybe she does!! Because Beach Read was sort of set on vacation, too!

message 5: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2768 comments I can think of a few fictions but I'm looking for nonfiction as I do with many of my prompts.

Brandon Harbeke | 749 comments Ron wrote: "I can think of a few fictions but I'm looking for nonfiction as I do with many of my prompts."

Nonfiction should be fairly easy for this one. You could go with a travel book or a book that details a place that you would like to go. The vacation would be yours in this case, even if it is just a plan or dream for the future. If it's a popular destination, then somebody is following the guidance on their own vacation, and it would be somebody's vacation.

message 7: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2768 comments I totally agree, Brandon. This one I'm looking forward to doing this because there are so many great books out there. Either people's experiences or the locations themselves. I have a lot of books on Yellowstone which sound promising.

message 8: by chysodema (new)

chysodema | 50 comments Thanks for recommending The Villa, that looks just up my alley.

Since a lot of vacation reads skew towards the romance and self-discovery genres, I'll recommend The Hands of the Emperor if anyone is looking for science fiction to fulfill this category.

message 9: by Denise (new)

Denise | 420 comments I'm not sure what to do with this one yet, but Saint X was good, and it's about a family who went on a vacation.

LOL maybe she does!! Because Beach..."

Happy Place is her 2023 release that is also about a vacation

message 11: by Kaia (new)

Kaia | 235 comments I'm planning on Three Men In A Raft: An Improbable Journey Down The Amazon, which I already had penciled in for ATY's body of water prompt.

Now that gives me an idea. I want to limit the number of new books I add to my reading challenges as my TBR/Wishlist is large. However, I hope to someday go to Scotland and Ireland. Perhaps a non-fiction book set in one of those places. That would tick a NY Resolution to do something toward getting there.

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahbastien1) | 113 comments I just got a book called Vacationland which would seem to fit the prompt! And if you like children's chapter books, Over Sea, Under Stone is about children on holiday at the seashore.

message 14: by Erin (new)

Erin (erin_leslie) | 33 comments Recommend The Unsinkable Greta James. Read it this year for the cruise ship prompt!

I'll probably be going with Happy Place

message 16: by Joshua (new)

Joshua (hitthefunkybeats) | 126 comments It's not only about a vacation but I Regret Nothing has a large section about a vacation, building up to it and planning for it, so I'm adding it to my list. I love listening to her books when I'm working on reforming my life.

message 17: by Karen (new)

Karen Witzler (kewitzler) | 156 comments Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert would work here, I think - it was a long vacation.

The Pampered Librarian | 183 comments Since 2023 challenge rehashes old ones for the most part, I am going to stretch it as much as possible to fit my own needs because I am interested in my own TBR list the most. So I figure, for this prompt, I'll read Five Survive by Holly Jackson. The characters are on a road trip during spring break ;-)

message 19: by Olga (new)

Olga | 14 comments For fans of old school romances there is the traveling matchmaker series by Marion Chesney https://www.goodreads.com/series/5538...

message 20: by Rae (new)

Rae | 10 comments Overground Railroad: The Green Book Roots of Black Travel in America could be a good pick for nonfiction. It's about the travel guide that helped Black Americans find hotels, restaurants, etc. that would serve them as they traveled throughout the country before the Civil Rights laws were enacted in the 1960's.

That doesn't seem like stretching at all. Isn't spring break a "vacation"? Maybe I don't understand the word since I only know it as the American version of holiday. But a road trip seems like a holiday to me.

message 22: by Denise (new)

Denise | 420 comments Ron wrote: "Question: Could this topic maybe stretched to something like journeys/travels?

I think that's a great idea. The first one you listed there, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, is really good. And it's kind of a vacation.

JoJo Kirkman (jojo2013) | 56 comments I am hoping that The Beach will work for this category.

Good choice, I read that this year though.

I have a few Walt Disney World books I bought in light of the 50th (WDW) and 40th (Epcot) anniversaries taking place last year and this year, including Walt Disney World: Then, Now, and Forever and Walt Disney's EPCOT Center: Creating the New World of Tomorrow.

Teri (teria) | 1554 comments Ron wrote: "I can think of a few fictions but I'm looking for nonfiction as I do with many of my prompts."

I can suggest books by Bill Bryson, especially A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail and Notes from a Small Island

I personally would think that journey books count as a vacation. Maybe a difficult vacation, but one nonetheless. But then I count almost anything that gets me out of the house for more than a night a vacation.

message 28: by Teri (new)

Teri (teria) | 1554 comments Now that I'm aware of The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal, this may kick out an Agatha Christie choice since I'll get to those anyway.

Thanks for the tips.

The Pampered Librarian | 183 comments Ellie when I wrote that my choice here may be a stretch was because when we talk about "vacation" I'm thinking of a sunny beach read, and "Five Survive" by Holly Jackson is a YA thriller. So perhaps a stretch in terms of genre? Regardless, I'm sticking to it :D

they are headed out on a vacation it counts for sure!

Same with Every Vow You Break (& The Spare Man ... & Something in the Water ... honeymoon gone wrong is a popular theme!!) - they are on their honeymoon when things start going wrong for the heroine.

message 32: by Mony (new)

Mony (mony1) | 70 comments Plan to read one of these

Between Two Kingdoms A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Suleika Jaouad My Killer Vacation by Tessa Bailey Happy Place by Emily Henry

message 33: by Denise (new)

Denise | 420 comments JoJo wrote: "I am hoping that The Beach will work for this category."

It sounds like it will, I'm going to read it. Thanks for posting the link!

message 34: by Bea (new)

Bea | 715 comments So based on my idea above (message 12), I have found a book that might qualify for this prompt.

Scotland with a Stranger is a memoir.

message 35: by Angela (new)

Angela | 2 comments Death in Cyprus
H y Hanna has a series all about a long vacation in Florida, the first one is Flip-Flops and Murder

message 36: by Anshita (last edited Jan 06, 2023 01:09PM) (new)

Anshita (_book_freak) | 272 comments I am reading Swimming Home by Deborah Levy. The book is about a week-long vacation in Alpes-Maritimes, France.

Walt Disney World and Epcot Center by Valerie Childs and Walt Disney Company
5 stars

message 39: by Khalisti (new)

Khalisti | 26 comments I'll go with A room with a view for this one by E.M.Forster , it's been on my TBR list for a long time

message 40: by Heather (new)

Heather Berg | 3 comments Just finished Book Lovers by Emily Henry…fit perfectly with this theme as it centers around two sisters who decide to spend a month in a small town in North Carolina on vacation. All in all, definitely a comforting and worthwhile read. Especially if you like rom coms or feel good stories, this one is great.

message 41: by Britany (new)

Britany | 1790 comments I just finished this one too Heather. I was going to use it for this prompt, but put it in for #BookTok instead and got the group read on audio.

message 43: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (mimbza) | 109 comments The Switch by Beth O'Leary The Switch is another story by English author Beth O'Leary. It features 79-year-old Eileen who lives in a little Yorkshire village and her granddaughter Leena. Leena is struggling with corporate London life and Eileen has decided to try dating again so they decide to swap homes for the summer with fun and unexpected results. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ here is my review

Clare fleckenstein | 4 comments We Were Liars by E. Lockhart we were liars by E. lockhart

message 45: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 534 comments I read Skating to Antarctica by Jenny Diski.

The author's description of a boat trip from the tip of South America to Antarctica via South Georgia is interspersed with her memories of depression and her dysfunctional family. Much more interesting and amusing than it sounds - I really enjoyed this book.

message 47: by Lilith (new)

Lilith (lilithp) | 1126 comments I read Five Survive and it is most definitely a spring break vacation gone wrong! It started off a little slow (for me), and yes, there are some very unlikable characters here, but I like flawed characters, finding out their motivations and reasons behind actions. Lots of twists and turns made it work for me!

message 48: by Katy (new)

Katy Hill (kehill17) I'm reading The Cabin for this prompt. Probably not the happiest of vacations though!

message 50: by Themis (new)

Themis I read French Holiday for this prompt. I recommend it if you like romance.
