Welcome to The Gothic Bookshelf.

My goals for this community is to create a place for Readers and Authors to discuss Gothic Literature and all of its sub-genres.

While the classics hold a special place for me, as a contemporary author of gothic horror, I hope to interact with more authors and readers. My favorite Gothic Horror sub-genre will probably always feature a ghost. Not all ghost stories are Gothic and not all Gothic Horror stories feature a ghost.

Please feel free to begin a discussion. I shall be adding those in the coming days. Do you have a favorite Classic Author? Contemporary Author? My classic go to author is Sheridan LeFanu.

Welcome and let's have some fun discussing this fabulous genre of literature.

Carrie Dalby Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Bronte sisters for classic.

My favorite sub-genres (to read and write) are Southern Gothic and Gothic family saga.

I keep a Gothic shelf for the books I've read:

And a Southern Gothic one:

Plus a family saga (though not all of these are "Gothic" family saga):

There is some overlap on these shelves.

Debbie Johansson | 6 comments Thank you for creating this group, L.B.

I do love the classics, and like Carrie, the Brontes are a favourite. And I completely agree about ghosts! Any story with a ghost always grabs my attention. ;-)

I'm looking forward to the discussions, and discovering authors both new and old.

Debbie Johansson | 6 comments Hi Carrie,

Thank you for sharing your Gothic book shelves. I don't know much about Southern Gothic or family sagas, so I'll be sure to take a look. :-)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 5 comments Happy weekend!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 5 comments I don't really consider myself a classics person. I do love a good ghost story, a haunting, witches. I especially love old, creepy houses on an island or the coast in my gothics.

I have been in several gothic bookclubs on GR thru the years but many of them fell apart. I used to read Victoria Holt, Phyllis A. Whitney, and Daphne de Maurier a whole lot. Oh, and Mary Stewart. I have some favorites among those.

Debbie Johansson | 6 comments Hi Debbiecat,

Great to meet up with you here on Goodreads!

I love creepy old houses, too! 'Rebecca' is one of my favourites, another is 'The Woman in Black.' Not sure if it's classified as Gothic, but it's a wonderfully creepy ghost story.

Apart from reading one Mary Stewart novel ('Rose Cottage'), I don't think I've read the other authors you mentioned, so thank you. I have heard of Victoria Holt, just never read any of her books.

I hope you've had a great weekend!

Debbie

I love making new reading friends! Rose Cottage is not my favorite by MS, but so many others are! Thornyhold is my favorite. Next to that is This Rough Magic. I have read many of them tho and we have a Mary Stewart group here on GR. They rotate the books. It is a pretty active group.

I loved the Woman in Black too! Def a fave. I forgot about that. I just love lonely old houses with sinister things going on.

Debbie Johansson | 6 comments Thornyhold is on my list of books to read. Thanks for the recommendations. I also love stories with spooky old houses. They're always on my reading list. ;-)

Debbie Johansson | 6 comments Hi Florence,

It's good to meet you!

I've never heard of that author before, so thanks for the book recommendations. And I agree with you when it comes to liking anything with a Gothic setting. It's what makes them so special. :-)
