Ale (eirura) | 3 comments Hello,

I recently upgraded my Kindle Paperwhite 2014 to the Signature 2021 and the all-new basic Kindle. I noticed the weight and the glare difference on both devices. I'm not so that keen on the glare of the new Paperwhite. It is more diffuse on the basic Kindle. I'm not sure if it's because of the flushed screen. Does anyone else have this issue on their Paperwhite? Is there a screen protector to correct this annoying glare?

Second, am I only imagining it, but the Paperwhite is much heavier than the previous Paperwhite? After using the entry-level Kindle and the Paperwhite in bed, there's a bit of discomfort. Maybe I'm just a weakling.

Do you think the Paperwhite is worth more than the new entry-level Kindle? I want to return one, but I'm unsure which one.

Gill Mather | 27 comments My new basic Kindle is lighter than my old 2012-ish Kindle reader, but I don't like it half as much. It's much slower and far more difficult to find anything at all. All my old books have been transferred to the new Kindle but getting to them is a nightmare and I often give up! I have a quite old Kindle Fire which I now get books sent to. It's quite heavy but not so much as to make it difficult and it's much easier to deal with!

John Sauer | 2 comments I have an old-school Paperwhite and absolutely love it for reading. I did, however, get a Kindle Fire 8 pretty much for the sole reason that it shows book covers in color. It is OK for reading...the glare is not too bad but it does burn down a battery compared to the Paperwhite.
When I travel I take both with me and prefer the paperwhite. Anything new, IMO, does not measure up in readability.

use the Adjustable screen – Now with adjustable warm light and auto-adjusting front light for a personalized reading experience, day or night option to adjust the glare

and yes it is heavier as it's bigger

2021 Paperwhite

Size: 6.6” x 4.6” x 0.3” ( 167 x 116 x 8.18 mm).

Weight: Wi-Fi: 6.4 oz (182 g) Wi-Fi + Free Cellular Connectivity: 6.8 oz (191 g) Actual size and weight may vary by configuration and manufacturing process.

Signature Edition:

Size: 6.9” x 4.9” x .32” (174 x 125 x 8.1 mm).

Weight: 7.3 oz (208 g). Actual size and weight may vary by configuration and manufacturing process.

and the 2014 Paperwhite could have been even smaller & lighter

I have the original Kindle and I love it. It has an 'e-ink' screen. E-ink screens do not emit light like LCD screens do. E-ink screen readers depend on ambient light. It's just like reading a regular book. No glare. LCD screens are composed of thousand of LEDs, 'light emitting diodes.' It's like thousands of tiny flashlights shining their light into your eyes. E-ink screens are like paper books. No eye strain, perfect for reading before bed, but not in bed. So, I recommend a reader with an 'e-ink' screen. Just like reading from a paper book.

CBRetriever | 487 comments the Paperwhite and all Amazon Kindles (not the Fire tablets) are e-ink screens

Ale (eirura) | 3 comments I decided to return the Paperwhite after all. After using both devices on separate days, the glare is a tad more obvious on the Paperwhite. But the size and weight was starting to annoy me because my Paperwhite 2013/14 is smaller and lighter than the current Paperwhite. It’s easier to take around. The 300 PPI is the same in both basic Kindle and Paperwhite so I just don’t see the point with the current Paperwhite but the larger screen which isn’t a primary must for me.

I presume you're getting the Basic Kindle instead? It's nice too.

Ale (eirura) | 3 comments I bought both the basic and the Paperwhite. I was figuring out which one to return since I don’t need both after all. The differences aren’t that drastic and since I do switch the case to a waterproof sealed bag when I read in the tub or beach, the waterproof on the Paperwhite is useless for me. The speed is pretty much the same. Warm light and the auto brightness are missing but not features that are important for me and I do read a lot. If they had made the paperweight in the basic kindle size and weight, I would have kept the paperweight.

Patricia I have a Paperwhite (11th generation) & the page numbers have disappeared from all my books while reading. Is this a new thing? Is there a way to get them back? Thanks!

simply tap in the lower left corner and cycle through the option or tap on the Display icon (Aa) and select More -> Reading Progress

Patricia I tried that yesterday & it didn't work (lower left corner), but it seems to be working now. Thanks!
