I bought this book from the Augusta library's book cart of used books. The Haunted Hotel: A Mystery of Modern Venice by Wilkie Collins
I recently bought the literature book from thriftbooks. it's about literary analysis. I've challenged myself to read one nonfiction book per month this year so I'll be doing this one
My library does sales of old books for only 50 cents, so this will be a fun way to support my local library!
I have a copy of Michael Ende's The Neverending Story that I bought from a local used bookstore years ago, which I'm planning to read for this category in January!
welp I don't know if actually own a book from a secondhand store?? :| there's just not many around and especially none that have english books and that's all I read to be honest... also at this point I barely ever buy books at all, I usually just get them from the library or scribd. Will have to check one of these days if there might be still a secondhand book around which I got a few years back!
I read The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. I bought it at Goodwill for $1.00

Thanks, Robin.*****
I suppose then thriftbooks would work too, right or even the used book section off amazon?
I used a thrift book. The Good Will isn’t far from my home the used bookstores are downtown & parking is an issue. Also I rarely go downtown.
I'm personally changing this one to "a book I got secondhand" and I'll use a random library book for it that doesn't fit any other prompt, as long as it's not a brand-new book where I'm the first one to check it out.The only reason I can afford to do these challenges is because I have a great local library, and I'm not about to go out and actually purchase a book (and then have to give it away or find shelf space for it afterwards) just to fulfill a prompt.
Ruth wrote: I'm personally changing this one to "a book I got secondhand"I was actually thinking about doing the same. A friend of mine just gave me a box of his books that he won't be taking on his move so since they're technically not mine and they're not bought then I figure they're like second hand.
Same. I have so many secondhand books, and I have no memory of which I bought and which I got for free.
I read Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser, bought from World of Books. I wanted to read this, and when I checked, it wasn't available from the library (of course, it is now).I learned a lot from this book about the history of the United States - there was also foreshadowing for the future. The writing and personal relationship between Laura and her daughter was also interesting. A long book, but I would recommend it.
Using this for a second prompt as well, but I figure it would work since I got it from a used bookstore.Back to Our Future: How the 1980s Explain the World We Live in Now—Our Culture, Our Politics, Our Everything
I got quite a few choices on my shelf that I've gotten secondhand either from local library sales or Half Price Books. I'm going to go with A Map of Days for this prompt since it'll also help me with another challenge that I'm doing for "clearing the shelves" and it's one of the oldest books on my "to read" list!
This category is my whole TBR stack, but I'm going with Squeeze Me by Carl Hiaasen, which was a fun ride like all of his books. Florida, politics and giant snakes - what could possibly go wrong?
I lost my copy of So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish while moving house. Finally found a new copy at the second-hand shop yesterday and read it today! It was good to be able to fit it in somewhere - that's the first 4 books of the trilogy counted towards this challenge. Don't think I'll fit the 5th book in anywhere, but may read it anyway.
I forgot about The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi from a thrift store last year and completely forgot about it. I will be reading that for this prompt.
I'm also going the secondhand route and will be using a book I picked up at a Free Little Library. I might have a book I bought used, but that rarely happens and I have no idea where it would be.
I ordered these used from ebay so since they're from a second-party seller I would imagine they count:Love Comes Softly 1-4 by Janette Oke
Love Comes Softly Pack, vols. 5-8
One of my personal challenges to myself is actually avoiding buying books at all, and either using my library resources, Kindle unlimited, or swapping books with friends/family. I just don't have the shelf space or budget, so I'm stretching this category to include books I've borrowed from someone else.
For this one I'll be going with: Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a DreamThis one can basically be narrowed down to 3 different topics for me:
-secondhand
-year you were born
-sports
*****
I might use it for all 3 just to cut down some time, I'm not entirely sure. Especially since there's another sports book I want to read. IDK I'll see.
I still don't know what to do, I've never bought a book secondhand (I don't think) and I don't really buy physical books anymore :(

It's in the spirit of the prompt (IMO) getting a book that's not new, even without buying it.
I read What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
I get the majority of my books from thrift stores and second hand book stores anymore :)

yeah that's what I was thinking/considering as well. It's really my only option... thanks Jen :)

This is almost every single book I purchase! I buy few brand-new books.
This is definitely too individualized to create a Listopia.
